"Oh come on Alvar. Like he's ever going to notice me." I sighed laying on my bed, my daemon landing on the bedpost.
"You don't know that. He can see you're a great fighter and skilled with a bow." He spoke tilting his head. "You hardly ever speak to the man though. Maybe that's where you're going wrong." I could now here the smile in his voice, if a falcon could smile that is.
"Don't get smart with me." He simply puffed up his feathers and shook his head in response. "Any way we should be getting ready. Next battle is in an hour or so." While we were getting ready I noticed a small beetle crawling on the floor. "Alvar." I nodded towards the inconspicuous bug. He swooped down and picked up the insect with his talons. "Duvessa. What a pleasure of you to join us." I spoke with a wry smile. "Where is he?"
"Ow." She complained but Alvar would not let go. "He's outside."
"What did you hear?" I questioned the insect daemon.
"Everything." She spoke, with satisfaction. I nodded and Alvar released the beetle, shortly after a knock came at the door, I opened it to see Spy brushing down his suit.
"Must you be so aggressive Chou fleur?" He smiled as his daemon crawled up onto his lapel, sitting like a brooch.
"Yes. That's five times this week that I've caught duvessa in my room. This time she was caught by Alvar, next time it will be my boot. Is that a sufficient price for your knowledge? We all know what happens when a persons daemon is killed don't we?" I smiled.
"You wouldn't." He laughed. I simply extended my hand and flicked Duvessa from Spy's jacket also sending him sprawling backwards, clutching his thigh as if I had given him a dead leg.
"Don't try me." I shut my door and continued preparing for the battle.
When it finally came time I sat on a bench mentally preparing myself for the blast doors to open. As they did I ran out into the arena and quickly spotted Eerin flying overhead, Sniper's owl daemon, on the lookout for enemy team members. I was about to get into a tactical position when I felt this overwhelming sickness and dizziness. I turned to see something I never thought I'd ever see. Someone holding onto my daemon. The opposition medic had his hands wrapped around the wings of Alvar, holding him tight, a sadistic grin on his face. "Y-you can't... hold-holding someone else's daemon..."  I stuttered. My vision was blurring, everything inside me was screaming that this was wrong touching someone else's daemon wasn't done. We were never taught this but always knew, like instinct. This wasn't just the feeling of having your daemon touched by another person it was incredible pain as well at being held so tightly, like I was also being crushed. I was so close to passing out when a wave of relief passed over me. I saw Alvar laying on the ground next to me, I reached out my hand to touch him, only brushing his wingtip, this was enough though, to know he was there. That's the last thing I remember until I woke up.
I quickly realised I was in med bay. I shot up gasping for breath, trying to comprehend how I got into this situation. A comforting hand was placed on my shoulder, holding me still. "He.. He.." I mumbled.
"I know. I know. It's okay. Alvar is okay." He smiled. "You Just need to calm down. What he did was wrong and that creep will regret laying a finger on you or Alvar."
"Thank you. I thought I was going to die. To kill someone's daemon, there's no coming back from that, no respawn. Nothing."
"Archimedes and I would never let that happen." He took ahold of my hand, "you're too important to us... the Uh team I mean. Not just us." He quickly added.
"Thanks." I smiled. "Well uh. I guess Alvar and I should be going. We're okay aren't we?"
"Uh. Ja. You're fine, but I want to see you tomorrow. You know, to check you both."
"Sure. I'll see you tomorrow." I smiled standing at the door, holding out my arm. "Come on Alvar. Let's go." He flew over and perched on my forearm.
Over the next few months we continued to visit medic and Archimedes. I am convinced it's nothing, Alvar says otherwise. We have grown closer nonetheless.
I had joined medic for a movie and we were both sat on his couch. "Are you feeling okay Schatz? You've been very quiet." He questioned, absentmindedly playing with a lock of my hair.
"It's a movie Medic. It's what you do." I laughed sarcastically. "Just thinking." I smiled. "You know how when you touch another person's daemon in a threatening way or without the humans consent, well we know what happens."
"Ja." He nodded. "What about it?"
"Well what if you had consent, it's touching another person's soul. What would it be like?"
"I've heard it can be quite enjoyable." He stated, "as you say, it's touching another person's soul, so it's commonly done between lovers. You know?"
"Yeh. I suppose." I shrugged. After this we just continued our night, me too nervous to say any more.
A year has now passed since my encounter with the opposing medic and Alvar. Every time I see him in a battle he stares at me, a twisted, sadistic grin on his face. He knows he's inside my head. Something like that will never leave me, that deep feeling of intrusion, grabbing ahold of my soul. It instilled a deep set fear and hatred for the man. I was just about to take out their scout when an all too familiar sensation of nausea gripped me. He had done it again. "I should've rung this bird's neck the last time. You're nothing but a thorn in our team's side." I fought to keep myself conscious and watched the man fall limp onto the ground in front of me, his daemon vanishing into a puff of dust. Behind him stood our medic his crossbow aimed at the daemon, not the man.
"I told you he'd never do it again and now he won't." He spoke with a straight face. I was still feeling rather sick so he helped me back to my feet, I noticed Alvar still laying on the ground, I reached out for him but Medic swooped his hand down, lifting the exhausted falcon from the ground, I felt nothing but feeling so sick I paid it no mind.
Once back at the base I had begun to feel better, I no longer felt dizzy but still a little nauseous so agreed to a quick check up. Alvar had also regained consciousness and sat on the bed next to me.
"God help any man who goes near your Mrs." I laughed dryly. "If you do that for little old me then..."
"I don't." He stated, placing a thermometer under my tongue. "I live alone. No one here or at home." He went back to writing on his clip board, glancing at the thermometer protruding from my mouth.
"Oh. I assumed since I never saw you with anyone that there must be someone on the outside. You know?" I shrugged, "also since you never really responded to my advances..." I got off the examination table and wandered over to his desk, upon which sat Archimedes. "Perhaps that was my fault. Maybe I was being too subtle." Tentatively I extended the back of my index finger towards the white dove. I received no protest but was being watched intensely. I gently stroked the breast of the bird with my finger. His feathers were soft and downey. I repeated the action, earning a light gasp from the doctor. I looked up, it wasn't nausea or pain. It was different. What he said, when someone you love touches your daemon, it's... enjoyable. He stepped towards me, reaching out his hand towards Alvar who was perched upon my shoulder. He did the same as what I did with Archimedes. That's when I felt it. Less like pleasure more like complete contempt. It is a strange feeling I cannot put into words. You simply have to experience it in order to understand. "So that's why you were so eager to protect me." I whispered, my forehead now pressed against his.
"Ja." He murmured in response.
"I'm glad of it." I smiled. "Seems as though we were both oblivious." I smiled stepping back, towards the door to his room. "Film?" I grinned.
"Ja. Something like that." He smirked, following close behind.
