It's been twenty minutes since Ashton and his family showed up, and the dinner has gone terribly. My mom absolutely adores Ashton, but won't even talk to Luke. Tom is trying to have small talk with Ashton's mom, but it is still awkward. Luke is just picking at the food on his plate because I can tell he doesn't feel comfortable.
"I think your mom hates me," Luke leaned in and whispered to me. His breath danced on my neck sending chills down my spine.
"don't be so negative lukey," I whispered back half smiling when his blue eyes met mine. I hated seeing people uncomfortable, because that was me when Tom came into the family. I didn't talk to anyone except my brother.
Alex is doing fine at the dinner though. He and Ashton are talking away about Ashton's little brother who couldn't make it here because he is at camp. That makes my mom love Ashton even more now because he's obviously good ith kids. If she saw Luke at the park today, maybe she'd be nicer.
"Hey mom," I said getting her attention away from everyone else, "Can luke and I get the dessert please?" I felt Luke tense up beside me when my name left my mouth. I looked at him and smiled. He didn't show any emotion toward me at the moment.
"You could always go get it by yourself? You don't need Luke to help you. He looks fine sitting right there," My mom challenged. She really doesn't like him. I can't even tell why! He hasn't done anything to make her dislike him so much.
"Allison, it's okay," Luke said in a low voice obviously not wanting any attention.
"No it's not. Mom why can't he just get the cake with me?" I asked with annoyance clear in my voice. I raised an eyebrow at her and now everyone was quite at the table.
"just go do it," She said after looking at everyone's stares. She was worried about what everyone would think if she said something else. I know my mom well enough to know this.
"C'mon Lukey," I smiled grabbing his hand and pulling him into the kitchen with me. It was still quiet as we left the dinning room, but then I heard Tom say somthing to start some new conversation. "Sorry," I said as I realized that I was still holding Luke's hand.
"you didn't have to do that, I can defend myself just fine," Luke half chuckled.
"It was annoying me too, so I decided to bite back a little. My mom can be very judgemental. She didn't even want me to wear this dress, but then I got a yes from her," I laughed at myself as I was pulling out plates from the cabinet.
"I never got to say how beautiful you look in that dress by the way," Luke said stuttering. His eyes then widened, probably due to him not realizing he said that, "I mean, I like the dress too."
"I like you dressed like this," I smiled at him to make it less awkward. Luke's cheeks got red and then he walked over to help me with the plates, "You can carry those right? I got the cake."
"Sweetheart, I'm not as weak as you think I am," Luke smirked at me as he grabbed the heavy dinning plates with ease and carried them into the kitchen with ease. I did notice the flex of his muscles through his shirt as he did this.
We both walked in and everyone at the table looked happy, I guess the awkwardness that I blew up faded away. Luke went to each person and gave them a plate and a fork, each returning a 'thank you' except my mom. I began to slice the cake and once everyone had a piece, I took my seat next to Luke.
"Allison, this is absolutely amazing!" Ashton said smiling at me showing off his dimples.
"thank you, I've learned from the best," I sadly smiled and my mom glanced at me, she knew i didn't like talking about it, she wasn't going to make it into a big deal. Only thing I'm glad she did tonight.
