It was a sunny summer day. Birds were singing, warm breeze was flowing, scent of lilacs was filling the air, everything was good. Nothing was different from other days.
- "Screeeech hissss this is the final stop, everyone get off the train please" said Emily. She was playing with train tracks that she and her little brother got for Christmas present couple of years ago.
- "Michael, could you refuel the engine?" she said to her little brother. These two siblings were inseparable, even with an age difference of five years. They shared a tiny kids' room and slept in a bunk bed, that practically took almost half of the room's capacity. It was a small city apartment, but suitable for three people.
Emily had a bright personality. She was always laughing and smiling, always trying to help others best to her capability. She had light brown, unnaturally long hair for an eight-year old little girl, sparkling blue eyes, freckles and as she smiled, her dimples came out.
Her brother, Michael, had a short, a little darker brown hair, blue and greenish eyes, round face and he had also dimples. He loved to tease Emily and drive her mad.
He and Emily are a stepbrother and -sister. Michael's father was a basketball coach, and their mother was engaged with him. Not for long though. Emily on the other hand, didn't know anything about her father.
- "Kiiids the food is ready, come and eat it before I do" their mom shouted from the kitchen. Smell of bolognese floated in Emily's and Michael's noses and they both screamed "Mom's pasta!" at the same time.
Their mom was a hard-working person. She would work in two jobs just to make sure that her kids get to eat something. Her hair was short and dyed black and she has a kind looking face. She was a short woman with a slender figure. She always wanted the best for her kids, even though sometimes it didn't seem like so. She had dated this guy called Dim for long, it was just a matter of time before they'd get married.
Dim looked tough on the outside, but inside he was much softer than expected. His appearance was very heavy metal-ish with a over shoulder length hair. He wore band branded t-shirts and he always looked like he was angry at something, or someone.
- "I have something to tell you kids" their mother started, "as you both know, Dim and I have seen each other for a while now. I've seen that you both like him and talk to him as you have known each other from the beginning, and now we have both decided to move together soon. You'll both have your very own rooms and more room to play. One poor thing is that you, Emily, will have to start a new school in autumn."
As a little girl, all she understood was that she'd have to leave her friends here. She was sad, but after a few moments Emily got all excited. New places to explore, get to know new people and a new room, all by herself.
- "When will we move then?" she asked.
- "In a month or so." her mom replied.
- "Oh, but then I have to hurry and say goodbye to ant-path and slug-path." Emily said almost cheerfully. These two were the roads that she used to walk to school. Other was a path that went through a tiny forest and was full of ants, and the other was a paved road that was full of slugs after every rain.
The month went by fast, and soon they had moved to a new house. It was a two-storied row house. Upstairs had all three bedrooms, one big bathroom and a sauna, and in downstairs there was a smaller bathroom, kitchen, hallway and the living room. The row houses were located along a road, and across that, there was a horse stable.
Emily thought herself that this change will brighten up her future.
At least for a while.
