Chapter Fourteen: Cold...Time?
Logan Sanders

Creating the costumes for the production of Hamilton wasn't the most fun thing in the world. We were just trying our best to recreate all of the costumes from the actual show, which wasn't as fun as it could be. Usually I'm not one for 'fun' but when you take away half of my actual classes and stick me with some people who don't even talk, they just sew, them we have a problem.

I was told that Veronica was supposed to be in the crew, but rather than being in costume design like I was she helped work the lights and such. That slightly upset me because she was the only one in the group I really knew, but I wasn't too upset when Ms. Morris came in and announced something of interest to me.

"Alright, kiddos! We were thinking and we thought that maybe we should appoint someone or two to create the dresses for the lead female roles while everyone else works on the male and ensemble outfits. I want the dresses to be carefully created so which of you are really good at this?"

When nobody else raised their hand, I decided that it was my job to get these done. Looking at the work I had done so far for one of the ensemble outfits, I concluded that I was good enough for this task. I raised my hand and Miss Morris smiled, "Logan! Alright, follow me!"

I, indeed, followed her to a new room, which was filled with about three men who all looked like they meant business. This made me quite confused, but I continued on and sat down across from them.

"Logan, your job is to create designs for the dresses and these men will create them. We wanted to make the dresses for Angelica, Eliza, Peggy and Maria to be specially made," Miss Morris said. "Do as much as you would like. Just keep in mind that Angelica and Eliza will be played by boys so try to make all of their dresses comfortable for them."

Confusion filled my brain for a quick second and then I thought of something really cool, at least in my opinion. I nodded, and, once she handed me the paper and pencil to design the dresses, I started making them.

In total, I had to design fourteen dresses, seven of which were for Virgil, five were four Patton, and two were for Peach. It was not my fault that the lead females had so many costume changes.

My designs consisted of pretty much the same designs as the originals, except I added hints of purple to Virgil's, hints of light blue to Patton's, and hints of peach to Peach's. I also added for there to be knee-length comfortable shorts under the twelve dresses that were for the boys, and after that, I was done.

It was a process that only took about two hours to draw and color, and when I handed them in, the adults thought that they were 'brilliant' and by the time I was done, school was over. In other words, it was time for rehearsal. While I wasn't in the cast, I still liked to go to support my friends.

They were performing act two today, which meant that Peach and Roman would get to perform Say No to This. It was mildly uncomfortable to watch, but it wasn't any more uncomfortable than watching Roman and Virgil kiss at the end of Helpless when they weren't in a good state with their relationship.

But now that they were somewhat okay again, it wasn't that weird for them to be portraying a married couple, except for the fact that they were both boys and weren't dating.

At the moment, The Reynolds Pamphlet was about to start, and I was kind of intrigued to see how well it would flow with Angelica's part being cut out so they could add in Congratulations. Surprisingly, it went fairly well and I thought that it sounded really cool how they gave Jefferson, Burr, and Madison a new verse. Patton let me see his script and this is what the second verse sort of went like:

Angelica: I came as soon as I heard.
Jefferson: What?!
Burr: Is that Angelica?
Company: All the way from London? Damn!
Jefferson, to Hamilton: I know that you thought she might see your side of the truth.
Jefferson, Madison, and Burr: But she's not here for you.
Ensemble: Ooh.

That change was much better than just cutting the verse out entirely, in my opinion. But before I had too much time to enjoy the writing for the song, Patton came back to prepare for Congratulations. He took the script from me and looked through the song and then, once it was time, went onto the stage.

I overheard a crew worker talking to Virgil about something that interested me.

"Hey, so we wanted you to come in and record some background vocals for First Burn in case you wanted to switch to doing that instead of regular Burn."

"I would totally do that, but the thing is that I don't think I'd want to do First Burn. It seems more complicated and I'd have to face Roman while singing it...it just doesn't sound like something I'd consider doing."

I listened closer to the conversation, starting to become interested purely because I wasn't in the mood to hear Patton yelling at Roman for two minutes straight.

"Yeah, well we still want you to come in tomorrow just in case. You never know what's gonna happen, you know?"

"I know, but I'm kinda grounded and I can only come in for school and rehearsal..."

"Well then we'll..."

I didn't hear the rest of the conversation simply because Patton had skipped back over to where we sat and sat himself down, "Did I do good? It was a lot at once but I think I pulled it off."

Despite everything inside of me telling me to just say that I hadn't been listening to him the whole time, I smiled and told him, "You did great." If I'm honest, I don't smile much besides when I'm with Patton, so it was the best coverup when I was saying something that I wasn't sure about or if I was communicating a falsehood.

Virgil went on to sing Burn, and by the time rehearsal was over, we had made it to The Election of 1800. We would have to come back in two days for the next practice, and, if I'm being honest, I was quite excited. That was because I would get an update on the dresses that day. I was told during rehearsal that they should be done in around three months, just a few days before the actual performance, because these weren't quite professional quality but very close. It was still exciting.

We all piled up in my car, and I began driving the other two to their individual houses. I dropped off Roman first, and then Virgil, and then stopped at Patton and I's house. I was still getting used to the sudden change, but it wasn't as bad as it had been when I had just moved in.

His mother had made us snacks, that of which we were grateful for. We thanked her and then went to the bedroom that we shared. Though my bed and other belongings were here, I often found myself sleeping with Patton on his bed. I am not sure why; I guess it gave me comfort with the situation.

The door suddenly opened a tad and a familiar 'ball of fluff' as Patton had called her entered the room. Who was this fluff-ball? Well, that would be Patton's cat Muffles. I didn't entirely like the idea of Muffles being in the room, seeing as Patton was allergic to cats, but he had no problem with it at all so we let the cat roam.

"Perhaps you should've acquired a more...fitting pet for you, Patton. Maybe a dog would've worked better with your—ahem—health needs."

"Nah, Muffles is fine! As long as I don't pet her too much, I should be..." he paused his sentence in order to sneeze. I raised a brow at the statement he had begun before making the noise. To that he replied, "It's just a...cold, Logan. Nothing to do with Muffles."

While it was beginning to get colder outside, I didn't believe that Patton was getting sick already. He had been in perfect health all day, so obviously he had to have been lying to me. What can I say? I have a good system for sensing falsehoods.

I decided to talk to Kate about Patton's allergies at a later date, for Patton had decided that we should probably go see how dinner was coming along. I agreed and we went back downstairs to check on how the food was doing.

What? I require food to exist as a functional human just as everyone else, that's all.
