Katniss POV

Why,

Why did he have to write to me?

And Peeta, why'd he have to write to Peeta?

What was he even trying to do?  Dredge up old memories? Make me forgive him?

I can't.

I can't forgive him. Because he's right, I still see him as my little sisters murderer.

That's why I pull out a pen and paper, and write a letter.

 Gale

How dare you write to me, you abandoned me when I needed you most.

You left me, your hunting partner, your catnip alone to suffer.

I don't understand what happened to you, I guess the war changed you,

You were once a brave hunter, but the war changed you, you were willing to kill innocent people

to end the war faster, not only did you design a bomb that killed Prim and a pen-full of capital

children, but you wanted to kill every one in the nut, there were innocents in the nut Gale,

innocents you wanted to kill, just to speed up things.

Maybe if you'd been in the Games, you would think differently about killing people.

Because after my  first games all I could think about was all those kids, who would never come

home to their parents, just like how all those capital children were used in the war, and are now

never coming home, just because they're from the capital doesn't mean they're bad people.

I can't look at you anymore, I might never be able to.

I hope District two is better for you, find a nice girl, settle down, you deserve that.

Katniss

I carefully put the letter in an envelope and head to the kitchen.

I see Peeta sitting at the table, drinking apple juice.

What's that?" Peeta says, gesturing to my letter.

"It's uh...a..."

"It's to Gale, isn't it?" Peeta says sadly. "Let me guess, you've forgiven him and you want him to come here, to twelve?"

"Peeta!" I say, taking his hands in mine. "Of course not, that's way off."

"What does it say?" Peeta says bitterly.

"I...I'm telling him how I feel, how he hurt me, and how don't want to see him again." I say softly.

"Really?" Peeta says, his voice softening.

"Really," I say, my voice breaking. "I can't look at him, it hurts to even think about him! Whenever I do, I see my baby sister become a human torch!!"

I break down, Peeta stand up, wrapping his arms around me.

His arms, they're getting stronger. I think.  Before his hijacking, his hugs were always warm and strong, now with every hug, his arms go stronger. Not as strong as before, but still good, still comforting.

Somehow we end up on the couch, his arms still tight around me, my head now resting on his shoulder.

"He was my best friend, Peeta." I sob, "He was everything to me."

Peeta strokes my cheek. "I'm sorry Katniss, and for what its worth, I think Gale's sorry too, he would of never hurt you on purpose."

"Peeta?" I moan.

"Yes?" Peeta says

"Promise me you won't be like that." I say, darkness pulling me under. "Promise me you'll stay."

"Of course Katniss." Peeta says.

"I couldn't bare to lose you." I say. "Your all I have left."

Peeta POV

She doesn't want him. I think. She needs me.

And I need her.

Katniss is asleep now, her head resting on my shoulder, her arms in front of her, as if to protect herself.

"I'm here, Katniss." I whisper. "I'm not going anywhere."

A memory of the cave from out first games came forward in my mind, but I shove it away, I don't want anything to ruin this moment.
