He was being put through too much. Overwhelmed mentally, shown horrifying images every second in his mind or proejcted across the room. None of it was real but it was working on Atticus, mercilessly played on a loop in a place he couldn't escape. He didn't know was real, if he could ever leave the room but you were on the outside of it.
