I'm starting senior high and everytime I see a single post on my news feed about school, I just feel so scared and worried. I had experience from a bad school year and I don't want to encounter the same people from the past. The problem with my school is the mentality that the smarter you are, the more dominant you are. Nerds aren't even the inferiors here, if you'd believe (wattpad teenfic stories just don't come true lol) Now, the smart people in my school tend to make the dumber/less smart people outcasts. They leave them out of conversations, they have their own cliques, and maybe I'm a little intimidated by their aura. I've been in every class with them because I have high grades, and I'm just scared about this school year."
Hi! I want to start by saying school is going to be hard and full of challenges no matter what grade you're in and you should definitely react to situations based on that.
To address your concerns about running into bad people, you're just going to have to trust your intuition on that. Because the idea of "bad" people is subjective to each person, I'm going to have to say don't jump to make friends immediately. Instead, scope out the type of people you encounter and based on that you can start making friends. Be friends with people who don't start or participate in drama and you'll avoid the worst things that happen in your institute. And as cliche as this sounds, you should know how to say no and what you're worth no matter what anyone else says.
I've learnt first hand that bad experiences do not necessarily follow you to a new setting. So getting a fresh start is going to not only guarantee new friends, but also new opportunities.
You also mentioned that being smart equals popularity in your new school. That surely breaks the stereotype of being popular depends on how rich or pretty or athletic you are. Pay attention in class. If you want to do well in class, the best place to start is to pay attention. I don't think there's any help to be had there other than the fact that you should try and keep up with your own studies rather than focusing on how dominant the nerds are. Naturally, people talk about other people's problems and lives but it's also best to stay completely out of it because getting involved in drama could mean you jeopardizing your academic career. Being popular isn't everything (although it feels like it is sometimes). Don't spend every waking moment of your life trying to be the popular one. If you're likeable and someone people want to be around, they'll naturally gravitate towards you for being you. Stay confident and don't let others intimidate you.
And my final tip is to revise a topic as soon as you learn it. That way, you don't have to stress about keeping up with studies. So if you really want to get good grades, you just have to read through it once to refresh it in your mind.
I hope my tips helped as these were some of the things I always heard but never followed.
