                              ~Bex's POV~

"So what's your family like?" Marissa asks, turning over on her side to face me. We've been talking on and off for about an hour while we've begun putting some of our stuff away. Finally, we decided to take a break and now that I've stopped, I can feel the burning in my arms again.
"We-we're normal," I lie. Some things about us are normal. I mean, we're not a bunch of freaks, so technically it's not a lie. "We keep a close circle with each other." She nods, looking through the window that's on my side.
"What about Alaric?" She asks. Why can't I make one friend who doesn't have a thing for him?
"My family is his family. His dad died before he was born, so my dad stepped in to take the place. He's very close to his mom," I tell her. Maybe mentioning Zurine wasn't the smartest idea.
"I'm sorry to hear that. It must have been hard for him to grow up without a father," she says. "I would know, mine was never really around. Atticus filled those shoes the best he could, which is why he's so ridiculous with me."
She doesn't seem like someone I would usually pick as a friend, but some things about her remind me of Connie. I'm happy I got roomed with someone I can at least get along with. I was worried I'd get roomed with some weird girl or something along those lines.
"He has a dad, he stole mine," I say, sitting up. Someone knocks on the door loudly, making me flinch. My immediate reaction to that kind of knock is to tense up, thinking it could be the cops to "talk" with my dad. Marissa rolls off her bed and answers the door, opening it wider to let whoever it is in.
Her brother glances over at me but says nothing. "Can you please not knock like a damn cop," Marissa says.
"Habit," he says. I turn my attention over to them, noticing the uniform he's in. I was right, it was the cops. But this time just one cop that looks super good in his uniform. Police make me nervous for obvious reasons, but damn did a whole new reason just develop. "Ready for dinner?" He asks her.
"Yeah, I just need to change my sweats," she says, grabbing the jeans she places earlier on her bed. She gives me a small wave before walking out to find the bathrooms. I squat down next to one of my spill filled boxes, awkwardly acting like I'm looking for something.
"What is that?" He asks. Oh gosh, what did he find? I snap my head in his direction. Alaric better not have smuggled something in one of my boxes.
"What is what?" I ask nervously. He points beside the box at my bread roller. My face heats up with embarrassment. "Bread roller."
    "Because...?"
"Self defense. If I need, I can beat someone's ass with it," I tell him. The corners of his mouth almost curl up, but not quite up.
"A bread roller can't do much damage," he says, crossing his arms over his chest. Damn, how I wish his sleeves weren't long so I could see his muscles damnit! I feel like laughing when he says that, but all I do is smile at him.
"You didn't grow up with my family. These things can do more damage than you'd imagine," I tell him. He shrugs, looking at it with a now curious expression. "I could show you if you want."
"N-no, thank you," he says, stepping closer to the door. "You wanna go get dinner with us?" He asks. The sudden offer makes my stomach do a flip, but I make sure my comment sense is still intact. Just because he looks like he was sculpted by the damn gods doesn't mean I'm going to become blind.
"I don't know what you're trying to do, but stop," I say. His expression becomes confused. I gesture to his uniform. Gosh damn does he look good in it! "You're a cop, I know better. You aren't getting shit out of me."
"What shit would I need to get?" He asks. Does he think I'm stupid? "It's just dinner. I'm not gonna drag you in for questioning." My heart beats fast in my chest the longer I stare at his badge.
"You know this could count as police brutality if you keep harassing me to go with you," I tell him.
    "I'm not on duty."
"You're wearing the badge." He looks down at it and takes it off, putting it in his pocket. "Smartass."

"The guy at the front has been looking at you since we got here and you haven't even given him a second glance," Marissa says, looking up from her food to the man at the front taking an order. I haven't said much the whole time other than thank you, not comfortable around her brother.
"No, because I didn't glance a first time either," I tell her. She scoffs, eating another fry. Maybe I should have just stayed at the dorm and ate the walnuts I brought with me.
"So where are you from?" He brother asks, finally saying something. He hasn't spoken much either.
"Wincrest," I answer, fiddling with my fingers under the table. "You said you wouldn't question me."
"I was only asking a simple question," he says. Marissa looks at us with wide eyes. He looks back at her. "What?"
"Nothing, just doing a silent prayer that you two don't eventually rip each other's heads off."

"So how's your roommate?" Alaric asks as we lay squeezed in his small bed. Maybe I could just tell him about Marissa and not her brother. But he should know if a cop will be around every now and then.
"Good, except for the fact that her brother is a douchebag," I tell him. He looks over at me with a cocked brow. "He hasn't really done anything to make me think he's a douche, but he's a cop, so that's enough for me." He starts laughing, placing his hand in his stomach. I grab the joint that's between his fingers and take a hit.
"Of all the people, it just had to be you that got roomed with someone who has a cop as a brother," he says while still laughing. He won't be laughing if he comes around my dorm and Atticus is there. He can't lie, so every time he's had to talk to a cop, my dad has made him memorize everything he's supposed to say.
"He is pretty hot, so it's not too bad," I joke. Okay, it wasn't a joke, but it will be considered one for the time being. He glares at me, taking the joint back.
"Your dad would have a heart attack if you got with a cop," he says.
"As if he would even notice."
"It's a cop, Bex. He might not notice you, but he will for damn sure notice a cop."

AN: A pretty calm chapter, but that's okay since later chapters aren't calm at all 😈 I really hope you guys enjoyed!
Question: What do you think of the relationship between Atticus and Bex so far?
