Damien and I walked out of the pottery painting place, the hot California air hitting my face. We wandered around the shopping center for about 15 minutes and did some window shopping.
"Are you hungry?" Damien asked as I peered into a shop window.
"I mean, I could be but I don't need to eat immediately. Are you hungry?" I asked back.
"Yeah. I am." Damien chuckled.
"Well then, let's go get some food." I simply said and started to head towards the food court.
"Hey, wait up. Let's go somewhere nicer than a shopping center food court." Damien said in the near distance, grabbing my hand in the process.
I removed my hand from his and said a simple:
"Okay."
We headed back to his car and got in. We drove around the area until we found a cute little gastropub. Once we got into the building, we were seated in a booth next to a window. Things were quiet, Damien and I didn't talk much. Things were still awkward after the whole Abigail situation during the pottery painting. I was staring outside when the server came and took our drink order.
"I'll have an iced tea please," I told the server.
"And may I have a coke," Damien ordered.
The server just nodded and walked away.
"Is everything okay?"Damien asked me after a minute or so.
"Yeah, totally," I said looking out of the window and avoiding looking at him as much as possible.
"I know you are lying."
A minute passed where nothing was said.
"Was it Abigail? I sensed that you were uncomfortable when she started flirting with me."
"I guess. It doesn't matter. This isn't a date and girls are welcome to flirt with you all they want and you can flirt with them too since this isn't a date and I'm not yo-"
I was cut off by the server coming to give us our drinks and take our food orders. I got the clam chowder and Damien got the lager battered fish and chips since he is a 'seafood boy.' His words, not mine.
"Going back to what we were talking about before we were interrupted, you are allowed to be upset." Damien started the conversation once again.
"I may be allowed to be upset but it is not like I should be. I have absolutely no right to be upset when some girl, who was absolutely gorgeous by the way, flirts with you. The only time that is okay is when two people are romantically involved and we aren't."
"Do you want to be?... romantically involved?" Damien responded looking me right in the eyes.
I breathed out a heavy breath and looked at my hands on the table.
"I don't know. The last serious relationship I was in took everything out of me and I don't know if I can do it again. The sad thing is, it was years ago, and I still feel like I can't do it. I wish that I could but I just, I don't know."
There was a break in the conversation.
"I'm sorry for dumping this on you. I don't know what came over me. It just came out like word vomit." I apologized.
At this point, our food had been delivered to our table.
"It's okay. I feel very privileged to have you open up to me. I feel like you don't open up to anyone at the office and I know that you don't have many close friends in the area. And I totally get the relationship thing, my last one was the same way. I think that I get to the point of being able to be in a relationship again and then, when I get there I just can't."
