I stopped as I placed my shaky hands on my knees to catch my breath. I looked up to see I was almost to the airport, this made me run full speed again. I ran straight to the ticket counter once inside. I knew I didn't have much time until he started looking for me, I had to work fast.
I slammed the money on the counter and breathed out, "The farthest place you can get me from here."
I looked around as I pulled my hood further up before I turned back to the slightly startled woman.
"Um, there's a flight leaving for Alabama right now-" she began before I interrupted her.
"Perfect! I'll take it!" I exclaimed while I grabbed the ticket and boarding the plane.
I placed my carry-on above the seat, it contained the only things I owned at this point. As soon as I was seated and the plane left the ground I let out the breath I had unconsciously been holding.
About an hour into the flight, someone stood next to me in the aisle.
"Is anyone sitting here?" A nervous smiling woman asked, who looked to be my age or slightly younger.
I returned her smile and shook my head.
She sighed of relief and asked, "Do you care if I sit here? The man who was sitting next to me didn't care for children apparently."
It was then I noticed the infant in the carrier.
I smiled as I responded, "No! Not at all. He's adorable by the way."
She gratefully thanked me for my compliment and the permission to sit. She sat down and got the carrier adjusted into the seat between us. For a while, we sat in silence, as I was still shaken up about everything that had just happened and not in the mood to talk with a stranger. I took a deep breath and leaned my head against the seat.
"First time on an airplane?" she asked.
I opened my eyes and forced a smile, "Something like that, why do you ask?"
"You just look really stressed out," she said smiling back.
I shrugged and stayed quiet so she said, "Let's just change the subject. So, what are you heading to Alabama for?"
I shifted uncomfortably and said, "I'm moving."
"Oh, I'm sorry, I was just trying to take your mind off everything and make small talk. I wasn't trying to pry," she apologized.
She shifted the baby in her arms and I noticed he had fallen asleep. I envied him, so innocent and unaware.
She looked down at him, moving some of his light brown hair.
"We all have things we don't like to talk about," she said softly.
"So, what about you, why are you going?" I asked suddenly feeling bad as I realized she probably has as many issues as I did and was just trying to be kind.
"I have lived here for a little while, but I'm going back home to live near my family. Oh! I'm Olivia by the way," she said as her mood suddenly became happier.
