- Dan, isn't that black cop your partner?

- Okay, first of all, that guy's name is Marcus and no he is not my partner. He just likes to stick his nose in everyone's cases.

- And now he is guarding the door to my hospital room.

- Well, he is meant to be, yes...

I slip my shoes on and look over to Marcus, who is fast asleep on his chair. I nod to Dan, who then leads the way out of the room. We sneak through a couple of hallways before arriving in front of the hospital.

- Well that was surprisingly easy, my car is parked over there, let's go.

We make our way to the car. Dan starts the engine and sets up a GPS to make his way to my home... my mother's house.

- Dan?

- What is it kid?

- Why would someone want to kill?

Dan looks over to me for a split second and then concentrates on the road.

- That is a very interesting question. Well, there is always a reason why somebody would kill, it could be rage, jealousy or even just adrenaline.

- Really? Adrenaline?

- Many think life is granted, that it is given and taken. As a cop we see a lot of people with different reasons to kill. Most don't realise that their victims have family, friends, feelings, a job and plans for the future. Some just kill to see what it feels like or even to test the police and see if we will actually find them.

- Have you ever wanted to kill?

- ... I have seen enough death and I am probably going to see a lot more. But there has been times when I thought to myself: ' this world would be a lot better without this person'. In the end, it is not up to one individual to decide if someone deserves to die or not.

- So your job is to catch guilty people and then leave the dirty work to someone else?

- By dirty work you mean prison?

- Yeah.

- I guess you are right, it is very hard to judge someone. Sometimes, you agree with the killer's reasons, but other times you wish them a life of suffering and pain to atone for their sin.

- Can't be easy.

- No job is easy kid.

- I guess you are right, old man.

- Any plans for the future?

- No, I think for now I should focus on the present and make my life choices as they come along.

- But that means you have nothing to look forward too

- And nothing to be disappointed by...

- You are very wise for such a young man, who taught you all this?

- I am self taught.

- Of course you are, here we are.

We arrived in front of the house. It looked like it always did, but this time it had yellow tape around it. I hadn't realised that Dan got out of the car.

- Are you coming ?

- Yeah, I am coming.

I got out of the car and followed Dan to the front of the house. He went to unlock the door and stopped.
