Combinations
If it were just the six sounds, French would not sound as lyrical as it does. Because of this, French has a number of vowel combinations that take a different sound. Now before you get upset, remember that English does this too. For example, the 'oi' sound in 'oil' doesn't sound quite like o or i.Here are the vowel combinations to keep in mind:
Combination Sound Example
-eu or oeu or ue a combination of 'oh' and 'uh' heure (pronounced ore)
-oe like a 'aw' and a 'oh' together soeur (pronounced swaohr)
-ou a 'u' sound jour (pronounced juhr)
-eau or au like an 'oh' sound eau (pronounced oh)
-oi like a 'wah' sound trois (pronounced twa)
