Carious

I am jealous of the morning sun

Who gets to be the first to see you

or the coffee cup

who gets to kiss your sleepy lips awake

I feel really confident when I talk to Faith. I still remember her flushed face as she nervously bit her lip, embarrassed as if it happened a minute ago. Unlike when I talk to other girls, I can't bring myself to be rude to her.

She makes me happy.

I wonder what's going to happen when we get rescued. Are we going to maintain our friendship, or even better, relationship?

Feeling the urge to swim suddenly, I got ready and headed off to the beach.

Faith was there when I arrived. She was standing there serenely, staring off into the shallow waters. I saw a tear slip out of her eyes, and once the waterworks started, the rest fell in an unbroken stream. Faith crumbled, pressing her hands against the warm sand, crying with the force of a lion roaring.

I rushed towards her slumped figure. "What's wrong baby girl?" Oh my god, why did I say that? It just slipped out of my mouth...

Faith looked at me with teary eyes and hugged me like I was her lifeline.

She cried her heart out. I let her, playing with her hair until she fell asleep from exhaustion.

I put her into my arms and carried her to the place where we stayed at night. Sometimes, Faith really confuses me. She can be aggressive, a toddler and incredibly nice in the span of two hours.

Ryan and Tamara were talking when Faith and I saw them. Tamara's gaze turned into one of concern as she spotted Faith in my arms. "What happened?"

I whispered, not wanting to wake Faith up. "She was crying, and I tried to comfort her. Then, she fell asleep." I attempted to put her down, but Faith refused to lie down onto the blanket under her.

Faith continued holding onto my neck. "Kai, don't leave me..," she said, still sleeping.

"Who's Kai?" I asked Tamara, curious.

Tamara hesitated, stuttering, "I don't know."

Ryan chimed in, "It's obvious you do. Is he Faith's boyfriend?"

My heart sunk. Faith has never told me that before

"No, he isn't. It's a long story, which neither of you has to know. Do not ask Faith about it." Tamara firmly said, placing her hand in front of her in a "stop" motion.

We stopped pestering them since Tamara's statement sounded final. There's definitely something weird going on here. For the past few days, Tamara had always been outgoing and nice, but at the mention of Kai, she changed.

I want to know who Kai is.
