I waited silently behind a car as I watched Alyson, Jace, and Briana creep silently behind a dumpster. Linda was behind me making sure no Infected turned up and Parker was climbing a fire escape. Our plan was simple. Parker would climb up as high as he could to locate any other possible exit around these infected walking around.
The rest of us would stay on the street and kill any infected to make it easier on us. So far in total we only killed four, but that’s because they started walking over here and the rest didn’t. I looked over the car to see how man infected there were still about and I saw many. Some were walking, some were standing looking into the sky and others were crawling on all fours groaning. It really sickened me how this all turned out.
I heard a shuffle behind me so I quickly turned but only saw Linda reposition herself. I didn’t blame her, we were all uncomfortable down here. I looked up at Parker and saw that he was at the highest point he could get at. He was looking at something over the buildings, maybe the highway but I wasn’t sure. I saw him squinting his eyes at us and then he looked a little ahead of us and it may have been because of the infected.
He stayed up there for some time while we were down here. I started to get anxious because there were a lot more infected showing up and he never even told us what he saw from up there. I kept feeling that an infected would just randomly show up and that’s when disaster would strike. It was a gut feeling and I couldn’t shake it.
Finally after a long long time, Parker came down and crouched next to me. “There’s more infected on the highway but it we can sneak under the bridge, we might have a way of getting over there without killing.” Parker uttered quietly. I was taking this into careful consideration because I did want to get out of the city without fighting but if we went under the bridge we would have to go across a river.
I looked back at Linda and the gang, how would they feel about going under the river. They probably wouldn’t care but it is a bit chilly out here and if we got wet, we would be even colder. I peered back at Parker and nodded. We had to do what we had to do to survive. “Okay, I found an exit we can go through to get under the bridge but we’re going to have to kill a few.” I nodded once again already ready to get this over.
I told the others the plan and they all agreed to it without argument. We then followed Parker through an alley that opened up to a local supermarket. We decided that because we’re already here that we should at least get something for the road. We walked towards the market and the glass doors were broken and there was blood on the floor, dry blood at least.
“Jace, Alyson, and Briana, you guys stay out here while we go in and get some supplies.” Parker instructed them. “Wait, you’re not actually thinking of leaving us out here, right? I mean we may know some stuff but I still don’t think I can kill one of those, those things!” hissed Jace while clenching and unclenching his fists.
“Well some people have to stay out here just in case something happens!” roared Parker, frustration lines appearing on his forehead. They bickered on like this for quite some time and I could tell I wasn’t the only one buzzing with nerves about being out here for so long.
“Shut up! Just shut the hell up! You guys are fighting like little girls over a Barbie doll. I’ll stay out here if you just go in already!” bellowed Linda. We all turned heads at looked at her. There was shock, appraisal, and pity of the eyes that landed on her. I know she just said that because she was confident nothing was going to happen, but yet, I couldn’t let her stay out here for the sake of my heart.
