Spencer Reid is a complete mystery to anybody outside of his very small friend circle. He's smarter than your average adult, even at fifteen, yet he still hasn't learned how to avoid the seniors on his way to physics.
Spencer is used to taking most of the beatings. He almost starts to wonder if it was even fun for them anymore, or just a routine they felt like keeping. Today, however, Jennifer Jareau happens to be returning a library book when she witnesses what is happening.
"Get the fuck away from him or I'll drop-kick your ass to France," she seethes. The kid who had poor little Spencer pressed against a locker lets him go, and speeds down the hallway to bother some other defenseless sophomore.
"JJ," Spencer says, a little out of breath. "Where did you come from?"
"Why didn't you tell me you were being bullied again?" JJ starts.
"I didn't want to bother you," Spencer mumbles. He grabs his backpack up off of the floor and starts walking to class, but JJ stops him.
"I'm coming with you," she says.
"No, that's ridiculous. I can go myself," Spencer argues, but JJ is insistent. She's his only friend, after all. What choice does he have but to listen?
Out of ways to argue, Spencer accepts his defeat and lets JJ walk him to class. It's a little silly, but he tries to hold onto what little pride he has left these days. JJ is a year older than him, but she still acts like his mom.
When Spencer gets to his class, JJ starts to head back to hers. She was gone at least an extra ten minutes longer than she should have been, but her teacher probably wouldn't mind. She's a good student most of the time. Unlike Spencer she doesn't study for tests or turn her homework in two weeks early. She pretty much wings everything she turns in.
She and Spencer are like complete opposites, but she's never had a better friend. He needed somebody to look out for him, and she needed someone she could confide in. This way it all works out.
In English, they're partnering up. This is one of the downsides of JJ and Spencer's friendship: they don't have any classes together.
It may not seem like a big deal, but when your support is always on the other side of the school, things can be tough. To JJ's dismay, she's partnered with the only person in the class she hasn't talked to: the new girl.
It's almost cliche, but it's true that she was mysterious. She moved to Virginia the week before, and although it's unclear whether it was from out of state or out of country, JJ had zero interest in getting to know her.
The pale girl with shoulder-length brown hair and bangs walks over to the seat next to JJ, and JJ resists the urge to sigh. She can't help but be annoyed. She could have been paired with anyone in her English class, but she had to be paired with new-girl. She just really isn't up for making new friends at the time being.
"I'm Emily," the girl says. JJ forces a smile.
"Jennifer, but you can call me JJ." JJ hates introductions in person. They're always weirdly formal, and they make her feel awkward. When she and Spence met, she was so embarrassed about asking for his name that she didn't know it for a solid week and a half. She eventually learned it by looking him up in the yearbook.
Spencer still doesn't know about that.
Emily and JJ start working on their project, failing miserably at making small talk. Their words are few and far between, and when they are spoken, they're always about the work.
The project they were assigned isn't hard. It's only halfway through the period when the two girls are done with it, left with nothing else to do but socialize.
Oh god.
A/N: hope y'all are enjoying! I put a lot of work into this story so I'd appreciate votes/comments x
