"Hey, Spencer. Wake up," Cat says softly. Spencer finally opens his eyes after a good ten seconds of her shaking his shoulder.

Spencer mumbles something incoherent and sits up, running his hand through his messy hair. "You look ridiculous," Cat giggles.

"Thanks," Spencer murmurs. "What time is it?"

"5:25 in the morning," Cat smiles.

"Cat, what the fuck?" Spencer asks. "Why the hell did you-"

"I have something to show you," Cat asks. She hands him a glass of water and a granola bar. "Eat and get dressed, you have ten minutes."

JJ is the first of their friend group to wake up, and to the sound of a blaring siren. The first thing she can sense is panic. Her heart is racing for seconds that feel like hours, but she realizes it's just a fire engine. Emily rolls over in her sleeping bag.

"What was that?" Emily asks.

"Fire department. They're gone now," JJ says. The strangeness is starting to hit her. Why the hell is there a fire truck roaring it's engine before it's even light out? JJ checks the time on her phone, squinting her eyes at the bright screen. It's a little past 5:20 AM.

In all honestly, fires just.. don't happen in their town. The last one JJ can think of was a small trash-can fire at the park. The fire department wasn't even called, that's how minor it was. "Check the news," Emily suggests.

"The news? It won't be on the news yet, dumbass."

"Let's follow them," Derek suggests. JJ almost jumps.

"When did you guys wake up?" she asks.

"You aren't exactly quiet," Penelope shrugs. Aaron is still sound asleep, so Penelope, naturally, does the only logical thing she can and slaps him awake. Aaron wakes up with his face red, but more from anger than the slap.

"Penelope, I swear to god," he groans.

"I can't start the car without my parents hearing it," JJ points out. Emily thinks for a bit, then realizes something.

"How many bikes do you guys have?"

Cat practically drags Spencer upstairs into her room. "What's so important to show me that I need to be awake this early?" Spencer asks.

"You'll see," Cat says. She takes a small succulent pot off of her windowsill and sets it down on her dresser. She opens her window and pops off the screen, pulling it inside.

"What are you doing?" Spencer frantically asks.

"Going onto the roof. Are you coming or not?" she asks, her hand outstretched.

Spencer weighs his options for a moment. He could go home, leaving Cat thinking he's a wimp, or he could just try his best not to fall two stories and crack his head open.

"Fuck it," he says. He takes her hand, and together they climb out of her window in the pitch-black darkness.

JJ, Emily, Derek, Aaron, and Penelope are taking four bicycles to investigate whatever fire is happening. Emily is standing on the back of JJ's bike, and they're riding down the street in the middle of the road. "Are you sure this was where they were going?"

"Yes I'm sure," JJ says. They all stop in the gutters when they hear another siren. Two more fire trucks speed by in the direction they were heading.

"We're totally following them, right?" Emily asks.

"Yup," JJ replies. They speed after the fire trucks, staying a few dozen feet behind them to be safe. Thankfully, there are no cars out this early in the morning.

They're watching the sun slowly rise as they speed to a stop in front of the circle of fire trucks. They're in a place that's all-too familiar.

Half of their high beloved school is engulfed in flames. The five friends watch in awe and horror as firefighters drag hoses over the asphalt. "Hey, kids," a tall police officer with a thick beard says, "You can't be here."

"I'm so sorry," JJ says. "We were just curious."

"Why are the cops here?" Derek asks.

"I'm not supposed to say anything but.." the officer begins. "It may be arson."

Spencer and Cat are sitting next to eachother with their legs dangling over the roof's edge. "Isn't it beautiful?" Cat asks. The sky is a collage of oranges and reds, the sunrise turning the clouds pink.

"Yeah," Spencer smiles, "It really is." Cat is still wearing her sweatpants and oversized t-shirt, and Spencer is wearing his clothes from the day before.

Cat turns to look at Spencer. She thinks his bed head makes him look even more attractive. Spencer looks back at her and smiles his signature awkward half-smile. Cat leans in, and without another care in the world, she kisses him.
