it takes only a moment
for your lips to join with mine,
and take me away
into edgeless eyes
that see nothing
except dark floors
and windows
that seem to break
beneath cold hands.
your hand in mine,
the dust that forms our ears
collapses into nothing,
and we can only hear
the thin ringing
of time, as it wavers
and brushes against our ankles.
it's not quite cold enough
to be shivering,
and yet you always told me
that it would be frozen.
i never understood,
but now, as you smile tidily,
the chill of remembrance
tangles around my fingers.
it was only ever a dream.
i know now
that you weren't meant to meet me
at the crossroads,
where i had to choose between
existence and blissful unawareness.
you tell me it's my choice.
but when you look at me
with those peaceful eyes
and waiting hand,
i know that i would follow you
into the whitest sea
and the darkest morning.
because being with you
makes my thoughts dance
and my heart beat.
