It's Okay To Be Happy

What is happiness? Well, let me think.
It is the feeling when you're on the brink
Of finishing a book that you really adore,
Mixed with a sadness you cannot ignore.

It's the first spoon of jam from a newly-opened jar,
And the sweetness that reaches to edges afar.
It's licking the bowl after mixing a cake,
And the smell that invades when it first starts to bake.

It's curling up on a sofa with a book in your hand,
And escaping away into faraway lands.
It's the warmth of a fire on a cold winter's night,
When outside the streetlamp is the only light.

It's the quiet of morning, when the birds begin waking,
And the first rays of sun talk of the dawn breaking.
It's the soft blue of dusk on which stars are strewn.
It's the warm, glowing night in the middle of June.

It's the sight of your friends after a holiday,
And the smiles when you ask if they are okay.
It's sitting beside them on the field in spring,
And knowing that there's no need to say a thing.

It's the jump in your tummy when you see your crush,
And then walking past in an unnecessary rush.
It's the glow in your heart when they give you a smile,
With your friends smirking slyly at you all the while.

It's singing in the shower without a care,
And rubbing your favourite shampoo in your hair.
It's wrapping yourself in your baggiest sweater,
Or the feeling you feel when things are going better.

Sometimes sadness catches you out,
Making tears fall freely from your mouth.
But if you can reach out and make it to the end,
Your ship (that was lost) will be found again.
