The wreck

As I drive down the road and go to turn into Mikey's drive way, it all starts flooding back.

The sound of metal bending, glass breaking, my mother screaming, bones breaking, sirens racing to the sight, saws, people talking and saying things I don't understand, clothes ripping....my first reaction was to slam on the breaks and cry.

Mikey must have heard the tires squeal, he came running out of the house with a beer in one hand and the phone in the other.

"What the hell Dj?!" He yelled over the music as he reached my car door.

"I... I don't know.... I'm just...." I stumbled over my words.

"Get out of the car and go in the house I'll park it for you." Mikey said.

I got out of the car and started walking up to the porch and I was absolutely fine. I didn't know what had gotten into me, I guess just seeing the road made me freak out. That wreck was almost the end of my life, I was in the ICU for over a month. Here is how it all played out.

It was one Saturday after my mother, my father and my two sisters and I had gone out as a family, that was a tradition we always did. Mom would wake us up at the crack of dawn and dress the three girls all alike. She would then get daddy up and carried him his coffee. Then she would yell up the stairs, "pack a bag of toys and food then get in the soccer van!"

Having three girls that were in soccer, that thing came in handy. After we were all in the car, we would go get breakfast at an old diner in town then head to the flea ,Ariel where we would spend all day running around and shopping. After we got our "bellies full" as daddy would say, we would get in the car and head back to the house. But that one day was different...

Daddy had got "his belly full" so we were headed home and we turned onto our road, Ashley, (my youngest sister) had dropped her sippy cup and was pitching a fit and neither Brittnie nor I could hear her because we always had our headphones in and turned all the way up and daddy was reading the paper. Momma turned around thinking she could reach it but when she did the car hit a pot hole, swerved off the road and into a ditch, hit a tree, then swung into a fence. The last thing I remember feeling was my right side hitting a tree and my leg, arm and shoulder come through my skin. Everything after that was a blur... I remember very slightly my mother screaming. After hearing that, I remember nothing except waking up in the hospital with Brit sitting in a chair holding momma and daddy's rings.... She then told me news that I couldn't ever forget, the wreck that had almost taken my life, had killed my mother and father, injured Ashley and Brit and almost killed me. Never did I think that I would have to care for both my younger siblings pretty much by myself...
