Red like the color of a burning flame

As eye met eye and emotion matched emotion, Luca could not help but feel a part of him howl in outrage.

A friend....The mantis should've expected it.

Maybe it was his lonely upbringing or poor social skills, but the prince himself had never made any attempt at getting to know anyone other than the little lady beetle he now held so tightly. To him, you were a solace, a sanctuary to talk about himself and to hear you laugh and share your sorrows with him endowed the prince with a sense of meaning. He had assumed you were alone too, nothing but your brother and some siblings to stave the cold feelings at night, but no.....

Here you were, talking, laughing with someone you had known since birth. A companion, a male companion to be exact. A primal part of Luca snarled inside of him, the need to hurt, and maim, and do things he generally wouldn't do boiling from the pits of his stomach to the back of his throat. Acid coated his tongue as embers from a long burnt out flame erupted once again.

The tension was palpable in the air.

You cleared your throat. The awkwardness in the atmosphere clearly getting getting to you. A faint hope arose within you that perhaps you'd be able to dismantle this situation before it got any worse.

"Oh, you mean Kaisey? He's an old friend of mine from way back when. Me and Abel usually hang out with him, but as you can tell we've been busy lately."

Luca didn't move, didn't talk as the beetle extended his hand with a cautious but friendly smile.

"Hi, I'm Kaisey. You?" He asked patiently.

Luca extended his hand, a strained smile upon his face. He was taller than the beetle. Taller than both you and him and anyone else in your tiny village. Above and beyond was what he was. Perhaps it was high time he acted it. Taking a hold of the prince's hand Kaisey could not help but feel the dagger like claws that lied dormant from within them. A shiver like wind went down the poor doctors spine.

"Its very nice to meet you....Kaisey. I am Luca, prince of Mantodea."

You furrowed your brows as the two continued to stare each other down. What had happened? Luca had seemed so sweet and nice earlier. Just a man who had known nothing but castle walls and mantis filled streets enjoying the busy life of your village. Luca's voice still retained its sweet tone, but there was an edge to it. One that reminded you of a certain other mantis who was now probably doing his job around the town; whatever it might be. With a start you realized that the prince still had his grip atop your shoulder.

"Luca....would you please let go?"

You put your hand atop his, a careful smile upon your face. The prince glanced downwards at you for less than a second, but immediately resumed his staring contest with the doctor afterwards. With a shaky hand he let go.

"Sorry (Name)....I didn't realize I had been holding on for so long."

The mantis finally broke his gaze with Kaisey and stared down at you with a guilty expression. A little feeling of relief worked its way into your mind. There he was; the Luca you had come to know. So vast and far from the stranger that had appeared for just a moment. You patted the mantis on the back with a friendly and warm smile, a feeling of joy entering your heart. You'd have to ask him what was wrong later.

"Hey, it's alright! It's not really something that would bother me."

You turned to Kaisey.

"Oh, how about we stop by the clinic real quick since I still have to get my injuries checked. They're not as severe as they were yesterday but i'd still like them to at least be looked at."
