Chapter Four

10th June, 1877
Outskirts of Denver
America.

The dreadful eyes of the rugged man behind the mask kept wandering around the street, the slim lanky man kept searching the carriage and this had been going on for about half an hour.

"Are you done yet?" Scarlett glared at the highwaymen with dirt splayed on their shirts and pants, mud covered boots, bandanna on their head and an ugly mask hiding their identity from her. Even if they weren't wearing mask, it wouldn't make any difference since she didn't know anyone around here.

"Hey, how many times do we have to warn you? Stop talking! We wouldn't be responsible for our wandering hands next time." Th he rugged man literally rubbed his dirty hand on her arm to demonstrate his words.

Scarlett should know better to keep her mouth shut but all the frustration, anxiety and frights were having a way with her. How did she get into this situation again? Oh yes, she thought they were law men but their proper language made it hard to believe they could be some brutes from the street. Maybe that was how they lured the people out. She could see the driver, laying unconsciously on his seat, well she hoped he was unconscious and not dead.

"I told you I don't have anything valuable with me. I'm not even from here." The look she received for her words couldn't be more scarier.

"We know you're not from here. This fancy dress shows that! Must be from a rich family, now shut your mouth! Your words giving me headache." The man spitted out then looked over at his companion. "Timmy, find anything? Hurry, would ya?!"

Scarlett couldn't believe this was really happening and fancy dress? She wore the most simplest traveling dress she had. The blue dress is anything but fancy. Maybe it was because of the design and cut of the dress since it was different than what most people wore around here. Oh lord, she should have listened to Marie when she had said she wanted to travel with her.

Travelling was hard but travelling alone and that too being a lady was so much harder. No wonder this had been happening to her. This was improper and wrong in so many ways.

She needed to make a plan to escape or else they wouldn't let her go easily. How many times she had to escape?

They might think of having their wicked way with her since that was all they had been suggesting since she was captured. She needed to make a quick run for it. Scarlett checked the man beside her from head to toe once again and he didn't seem to have a gun on him.

Thank the lord!

But what highwayman did not possess a gun? Maybe the lanky man had it or maybe none of them had it. Well if there was no gun then it was better for her.

The lanky man was still in the carriage and the rugged man had his eyes set on the carriage but his hand was tightly latched on her arm. So this was the time! He wasn't even looking at her. She looked at the hand holding her and quickly leaned down and bit the flesh like she was a starving animal. Her captivator screamed, quickly letting go her arm and clutched his own hand. Scarlett did not waste any time and turned around, made a ran for her life.

She could hear the shouts and loud footstep but she didn't stop. Scarlett tightly hold her dress up and ran toward what she hoped was the town. Mrs. Gold always said she was a good runner, today was the day to prove it. Eventually the sound of footsteps became quieter and quieter. She hoped they gave up. She looked back and she could only see the long road surrounding by trees but she didn't stop.

Maybe she should've stopped then she would've prevented her fall. There were many rocks littered around the road and her feet met one. Scarlett's feet bended and she fell down but who would had known she might hit her head on a rock.
