Chapter Seven

10th June, 1877
The Towns Church,
Denver, America.

Scarlett Brown didn't expect herself to be standing in a church before a clergyman when she thought of running away from her home in England. Sure, Mr Walter was a much better choice than Mr. Rutherwind but now she couldn't even choose as the compromising scandal was hanging over her head.

Can life get any harder for her?

While waiting in the inn room an hour back, she kept pondering on what she was going to do, where she was going to live and who she would ask for help. Already, Scarlett heard the whispers of how coming to the Little Ems state town alone was a scandalous behaviour.

So she knew if she came to live in this town later on then she would have a bad reputation but when Mr. Walter came back with a more horrid news, Scarlett changed the bad to ruined reputation.

She couldn't help herself from sobbing but when Mr. Walter decided to do the right thing, she sobbed even harder. He tried to console but she knew it wasn't in his nature to do that so she didn't ask him for comfort.

Scarlett always thought herself as a burden to her family and now she'd become a burden to him. She didn't want him tied down to her.

What if he has a lover back home?

Even if the thought of marrying him was a somewhat pleasant to hear, still she couldn't think of keeping him away from a chance to be with someone he loved.

But when she uttered her unwillingness to the solution, Mr. Walter demanded her to let him do right by her. Hence, they were standing in front of a middle aged man holding a bible, at his side stood his wife who seemed to be a big gossiper in this town and Mr. Walter's ranch hand Robbie standing on another side as the witnesses of this marriage.

The clergyman cleared his throat to get her attention. "Do you, Scarlett take this man to be your lawfully wedded husband?

"I do." She said quickly and softly keeping her eyes down, concentrating on trying to keep her heartbeat from speeding up. Since entering the church with Mr. Walter, the nervousness were having a way with her.

The middle aged man looked at Mr. Walter. "Do you, Jasper take this woman to be your lawfully wedded wife?"

The man beside her kept his head held high and uttered the two words proudly as if he had no problem marrying her. "I do."

But Scarlett knew better. He might be pretending for the people standing before him. So she knew she would forever be a forced bride to him.

"I now pronounce you man and wife. You may kiss your bride." The man in front them declared, closing the bible in his hand.

She quickly widened her eyes at Mr. Walter and seeing her frightened expression he took her hand and placed a soft kiss on it which still managed to cover her face in pink. Mr. Walter pretended not to notice it and gestured her to be on her way with him.

Scarlett had never been kissed before so she ought to feel frighten about the unknown activity. She always stayed away from young gentleman so she never managed to experience any intimate moments which she was proud of but now, would there be any intimate moments with the man who was now her husband?

Husband!

It felt nice to call Mr. Walter that. It was as if he was meant to be her husband. It was as if fate wanted them to be together. Was that what the Lord above wanted? Could there be any good left for her? Was Mr. Walter a blessing for her from God?
