Chapter Five

10th June, 1877
Denver, America.

Scarlett's head was throbbing, eyes so heavy that opening them seemed to take ages. The smell of medicine made her aware of her surrounding; she was in a docter's care, so it meant her protector must have saved her and she would be forever grateful for it.

She still could remember the feel of two muscular arms wrapped around her, warmth spreading over her from the cacoon of those arms, tingles shooting up from where his skin touched her skin, the great wide chest tempting her to lean there forever.

For only a few minutes in his arms, Scarlett felt protected like never before. She never felt this way before, maybe it was just her weakest moment and she needed someone to be there for her. Just be there, for her only.

After she would open her eyes and feel well, then all these strange fluttering in her body would go away; that she was sure of. Moreover. she hadn't even seen him. It was quite impossible to feel such things for a black figure, well that was what he was as far as she remembered from their brief encounter.

Nonetheless, all these strange feelings were utter nonsense, maybe it was just in her head. Maybe she should just open her bloody eyes first rather than making foolish stories in her mind.

Open the eyes Scarlett! The eyes!

The light that greet her upon opening her eyes made her close it again and she groaned from the heaviness that settled in her head from the pain. Someone muttered something around her so she feared she was not alone. She tried to move her head but again she groaned from the pain in her head but immediately someone was by her side holding her head, pushing all the hair from her face.

"Don't move your head, try to stay still."

An unknown manly voice said, with a bit of brashness in it which instantly made her eyes open and this time, it stayed open.

Now, Scarlett could see a man in front of her leaning his upper body over her, his sandy hair looked very soft that suddenly made her itch to touch it, eyes so blue that she could imagine the sparkling ocean in it, sharp nose but slightly crooked and hardened jaw.

Again with the nonsense thoughts, Scarlett and that too, with a poetic touch!

Her more than wise inner voice made a note of her sudden interest on a man. Though she couldn't deny she had ever seen anyone more handsome than the man before her. Scarlett usually never noticed man, she always stayed in her own side, away from any man to notice them but this man's face was worth staring and stare she did!

Scarlett tried to sit up but she felt awfully weak. The man seeing her struggle helped her sit up. "Are you okay? Here, let me help you!"

Maybe, the man was her protector because just as before, his touch gave her tingles that she tried very hard to ignore and accepted his help for she needed it.

"Wh---"

She tried to speak but the dryness in her throat was too much to bear. The man took a jar, poured water on a glass from nearby and gave her. Scarlett sipped all of it then returned the glass. She cleared her throat. "Where am I? Who are you?"

The man sat on a stool nearby and locked his knuckles together. "I'm Jasper Walter, Ma'am. You were found outside of the town, unconscious. I brought you here in the doctor's chamber. May I know your name?"

Scarlett looked at the huge, muscular Jasper and bursted out. "Oh, you're the one who saved me! My name's Scarlett.....Brown."

It wouldn't harm to give him, her real name for he would never come upon her family. Never.
