Thorin's company did indeed make for the hills as I had suggested. It took the rest of the day to reach the foot of the great domes, the road had become increasingly hard for the company to pass, especially on horse-back. For the most part of the journey I had stayed with the company, no more than a couple of hundred feet off in any direction, however as we drew nearer to the Weather Hills I had ventured out more to check that the way was safe from Orcs or any other beast that would slaughter us while we slept. However I found no signs of life apart from the odd boot print that were older than a day and I'd hoped that the group would remain safe in our passing through the hills.

Dusk was settling when the sixteen ponies stopped before the looming shadows that rose before them. The sun had set an hour earlier an now the sky grew dark and the wind picked up a little, whistling through the trees, a mouth less cry. The temperature had dropped also and I shivered in the cool evening air as it nipped at my clothing and beneath.

"Where will we make camp?" Fili called from the back of the company once the ponies were motionless and the group had been there a while.

"I'll need some of you to scout around within the hills for somewhere to make camp. I hear the foot paths are narrow and winding, I do not wish to lead the ponies on a wild goose chase while we search for shelter." Thorin answered, making sure his voice could be heard by all of the company. Faint murmurs sounded throughout the crowd of Dwarves, all them debating who should go, for none wanted to venture into the shadows.

"I will go," I annouced and instantly there was silence. Thorin turned his head to look at me, his features hard. "I can move quick and I can see well in the dark. I'll be able to find us shelter quicker than any of your Dwarves. And I will also be able to check one last time that there are not Orcs in these hills."

I didn't wait for Thorin's agreement, and darted off towards the dark hills. I quickly found a suitable path that would be wide enough for the small ponies just to the right of where the company were stopped. It threaded through the smaller of the hills easily, curving around them and remaining relatively flat. The lower hills continued for about half a mile before the trail turned steadily uphill as I entered the threshold of the jutting cliffs that pierced the night sky. I didn't intend to go far into the hills, the ponies would find it difficult to track too steeply after a full day of riding.

The darkness crept around me. The ground beneath me became dusty and small stones littered the path. Every fifty feet or so a tree would appear on either side of the trail out of the gloom. These weren't the thick, dense trees that were compacted into the forest that now lay behind us, instead they were spindly beams that shot out from the ground, their leaves small and far apart, spread out along the wiry branches.
