In the morning, when I woke up, I initially forgot where I was until I remembered that Nicolas drove me to his house to sleep over. And no, we did not have sex. We didn't even sleep in the same bed; get your mind out of the gutter.
I rolled over to get my phone, however I overestimated how big the bed was and ended up rolling right off of it and landing on the floor, hard.
Nicolas looked into my room, initially looking concerned, but once he saw me on the floor, entangled in my own sheets, limbs spread out like a starfish, he chuckles. "No that was just my girlfriend falling off the bed." That's when I noticed he was talking on the phone. He continues talking to the person on the phone as he walks out of the room.
I lay there, still tangled on the floor in the guest bed's sheets as I process what he said. He called me his girlfriend. And he didn't even ask me if that was okay with me!
So what are we now? Are we dating? I've never had a boyfriend before, I wouldn't even know what to do with it. What would I feed it and how often? Do I need to take it to boyfriend parks, like dogs go to dog parks?
I don't even know this man's favorite color or how long he wet the bed for when he was a child and now we are dating? Unbelievable!
Untangling myself from the sheets, not after much struggle, I throw on the only change of clothes I packed in my duffle bag and wandered into the kitchen to find something to eat. Grabbing a bowl of cereal (my go-to pretty much every time I am hungry), I sit down at the kitchen table to zone out a little bit.
Nicolas almost immediately interrupts my zone out time, replacing my bowl of cereal, with a plate of eggs, hash browns, and sausage.
"Hey, I was eating that!" I complain, reaching for my bowl of cereal.
"Sorry, it's not healthy for you. Now eat the food I made you." Nicolas says while stuffing a spoonful of the cereal I had made for myself, in his mouth and crunching.
I merely sputtered for a few minutes before hunching over and eating my food in silence, somewhat angry, okay very angry, that Nicolas had stolen my cereal.
Before long, Nicolas interrupted my pity party. "I decided that we are going to hang out today, and maybe get to know each other better."
After I give him the stink eye he gets a little nervous and tells me that of course we are not going to leave the house, which is good because if I have to change out of my comfortable pajamas there will be hell to pay. And by hell I mean Nicolas.
"And don't worry, I invited Dmitry too, so you wouldn't feel too uncomfortable."
I roll my eyes and stuff more eggs in my mouth, pretty sure that this whole "get to know you better" plan would be shot to shit over a board game, but, whatever, it's his relationships.
==========
"Suck it bitches!" I scream, jumping up on the couch and throwing my hands up in the air.
Dmitry sighs and hands me almost all of his remaining money. We are currently playing Monopoly, because Nicolas wanted to "get to know me better", but I honestly don't think he has ever played Monopoly, because no one ever gets to know anyone better, they just get to be angry. To be honest this is the only Monopoly game I've ever played where someone hasn't quit or flipped the board halfway through and honestly I'm proud.
Dmitry hands Nicolas the dice, and he manages to not have to land on any of my properties, which is like, half the board at this point. When he gets to the end of his turn, his phone starts to ring. He pulls it out and looks at it dismissively at first, but once he sees who is calling him, he abruptly stands up.
"Sorry, I really have to take this. You guys keep playing, I'll be back in a jiffy." Nicolas stands up and walks quickly out of the room, hold the phone up to his ear as he does so. He is notably anxious in the moment, and it changes the whole vibe of the room.
But I am not one to let a good opportunity to build some hotels and utterly wreck Dmitry go to waste so I do so, and Dmitry, inevitably, is forced to mortgage the remaining properties he owns, and sell some of them to me. By the end of his turn, Dmitry is almost completely bankrupt, having no properties and only one monopoly dollars to his name.
When Nicolas still isn't back by the end of his turn Dmitry just plays for him, and continues to play for him once Dmitry himself goes bankrupt fully. After Nicolas didn't return for several minutes, and several bad rolls, courtesy of Dmitry, made it obvious that I was going to win, I decided that I was going to see what the hell was going on with this phone call.
I stand up with a grunt, and launch myself into the hallway fully intending to immediately insert myself into whatever the conversation with the person on the other side of the line was, but Nicolas, surprisingly, wasn't in the hall. He wasn't in the living room either. In fact, I found Nicolas in his office, still on the phone, and pacing back and forth.
He was so engrossed in his hushed conversation with the person on the phone, that I was able to stand in the doorway and listen in on some of the conversation.
"Yes, I understand... I don't know if I am ready... yes, yes, I get that it is necessary... how long do I have?... there is someone I want to keep safe, I don't know-... okay, I think that is do-able... where should we meet?... okay, thank you, bye." Only when he was hanging up, did he turned around to see me standing in the doorway.
And for the first time since I met him, Nicolas looked like he wasn't in control.
"Evelyn," he whispered, opening his arms, as if asking for a hug. I moved closer to him and tentatively wrapped my arms around him.
Placing his rather pointy chin on the top of my head, Nicolas drops the bomb. "My father was assassinated today. I have to take over Russian mafia, effective immediately."

Hey, hello, yes I know that was a shitty cliffhanger to leave y'all on, but, remember, it could be so much worse, like that one Wattpad book I read where every chapter ended with the "world turning to black" around the main character.
I highkey wasn't really feeling this chapter when I wrote, which is why it is so small, but the next ones will be better I think. Also I feel like I need to find my comedic center again, so I'm gonna work on doing that too.
