Jack's heart skipped a beat when he saw the incoming call from Gabriela. It had been a little more than a month since the separation, and neither one had said a word to each other. Jack's hand shook as he answered the FaceTime call.
"Hey," Gabbie said, hesitation in her voice. "I just wanted, uh, to say h-happy birthday."
"Thanks," Jack said, relieved that he heard her voice for the first time in weeks. He didn't want to say goodbye to her, so he added, "How are you?"
"Fine, fine," the girl replied. "You?"
"I'm doing ok," he whispered. "We're gonna announce the album next month, so that'll be over with."
"That's great," Gabbie said, trying to sound enthusiastic.
"Maybe we can hang out more, before the summer ends," Jack suggested.
Gabbie nodded. "Sure."
Their awkward conversation continued only for a few more minutes, neither one wanting to say the wrong thing.
They both loved each other, but neither admitted how broken they were without the company of the other.
