Just as I predicted, the night of the lockdown raises the crescent moon, the only light for miles besides the flashlights on our cameras.
The interviews today are laid back and normal, with nothing really interesting happening. Unless you count Alex tripping over a stick and skinning his elbow, which he complains about while we all laugh.
We all head to nerve center first, to look at the cameras and make a plan.
As we're walking towards the building, I hear Jae call out to Zak, who's up front. We all turn to him, and he says,"I just saw a dark figure, like, following us. When I turned back around, there was nothing there. And I know it wasn't a shadow cast by the lights, since I'm the last one and all you guys are facing the other way."
We try to debunk the shadow figure that Jae saw, but we come up with nothing.
We continue our journey to nerve center, which sits on the main floor of the Reading/Math building, in one of the abandoned classrooms. Zak goes through all the cameras, then sends people out across the property.
"Alex, Mark, you two go to the gymnasium, and try to see some of the shadow figures that appear there. Saira, you and I are going to the housing buildings. Jae, you stay here and monitor us. Alright, let's go."
Zak and I head to the nearest building, the one housing kindergarten.
"Keep your eyes peeled for any spirits, Saira. Little kids are said to roam here. But I'm not sure if they're all little kids," Zak says. "Good thing I can tell the difference between demons and spirits, then," I mutter, and Zak grins.
Hours pass by, nothing happening. Zak and I case all the housing buildings, and even investigate the cafeteria building with Alex.
Right now I'm in the room with the wire, all by myself. Alex is in the gym, Mark in the Science building, Zak in one of the housing buildings, and Jae is silently watching us at nerve center.
A spirit box rests on my leg, turned off. I look around, straining my eyes to see any anomaly or manifestation. Sighing, I turn on the device, and white noise echoes around the room.
"Can you please tell me your name? This silence is killing me," I say, almost flinching at the irony.
Laughter comes from the box, and I do flinch this time.
"Saira Collings. Well met," says a young male voice from the spirit box. I look around the room, trying to see the spirit that spoke those crystal-clear words. But, no white apparition appears. Damn kids, always knowing how to hide from my sight.
"What's your name? The one who just spoke," I say, looking down at the box instead of at my camera, which is in my other hand, filming this exchange. "Justin Finnley," the spirit box says, in the same voice. I flinch at the name Justin, my mind flashing images of a dead body in a cabin in the woods.
I take a breath, and ask,"Justin, can you tell me how you died?" Static energy crawls across my shoulder blades, and I roll my shoulders to ease the energy. It won't go away.
"Electrocution." I blink at the female voice, which sounds defeated and angry at the same time.
"Who are you? How do you know how Justin died?" I ask, sitting up and forward, eager to hear these spirits, even if I couldn't see them. A few heartbeats' pause, then the female voice comes back, saying,"I murdered him."
The words strike a nerve with me, and I feel my breathing get shallow. My eyesight dims, but I don't close my eyes. I keep them trained on the spirit box on my knee, even though all I see is black.
