Death

The day after we get back to Vegas, I decide to do something that I've been thinking of doing for a while: watching the episode in which I die.

I lay on the couch, my laptop propped on my stomach, and search for the episode on YouTube. Redwood, the red-black dog, lays by my feet, and Grace, the black and white dog, lays on the floor, her head on the couch, watching the episode with me.

As I hit play, I see a warning about graphic content and adult supervision. I roll my eyes. I never followed those warnings as a kid.

Though with this episode, depending on what was put in, the kids might've wanted to leave the room.

It starts by showing a few parts of the interviews, along with a few pieces of the investigation, including Zak banging against the door that led to the room I was locked in and screaming.

    Then, the introduction video starts.

It’s quite simple, showing each of us in turn, and saying who we were. Zak narrates it, and I shudder as he says, “Demons and spirits alike live in this world, and they have hosts. Places, people, items. And we find them, and bring them to light. The paranormal hosts.” It hits a little close to home, considering all the spirits attached to me.

The introduction ends, and now Zak narrates in a normal voice.

"We are headed into Warren, Indiana, to investigate the Highlock Penitentiary. Now, this investigation is already strange, considering the person who asked us for help didn't contact me or Alex, but Saira. And, EVPs have recently been captured there, saying Saira's name. So, I'm guessing that the spirits there know Saira, and really want to talk to her," Zak says, the camera filming the van we were driving in.

All of us in the van nod, and I see myself, sitting up between the two back     seats, between Alex and Jae.

I look slightly scared, though slightly excited. If only I knew then what would come.

The episode cycles through the interviews, showing bits and pieces of them. Then, we get to the part where the cell door slams down onto the ground.

I see Alex running after me and Zak, then hear him mutter a curse as we all catch sight of the scratched pentagram on the cell door.

Then, I run off, and the guys chase after me. I remember vividly the feeling of my energy being sapped from me by the spirits as Alex catches up to Zak, standing outside a cell, and films me, crouched on the floor, white as a sheet.

Me and Sheryl are next, both going in different directions for an experiment. I see Alex filming me as I get a scratch from Justin. I rub at my throat, feeling the ghostly touch of his finger down my neck.

Then, the commercial screen appears, along with the chilling music. It disappears quickly, though, and we're on to the second day of interviews. This goes by quickly, just as it did on the actual day. Zak and the rest of us spend the rest of the day doing research before the lockdown.

Then, the green-tinted screen shows that it's lockdown time.

We enter the building, then split off. Zak's voice narrates, saying that nothing happens for a good two hours. Then, the cameras show Mark walking into the cell where I was sitting, since I didn't come out when Zak called over the walkies.

Mark shakes my shoulder, then holds up the Ovulus that was sitting on my knee, and turns it to face me as I open my eyes. Danger, it reads. Then, as my camera comes up to film the screen, it flashes three more messages. Revenge. Murder. Door.

"What do you think it means?" Mark asks. "I have no clue," I answer.

Then, a loud bang resounds through the hallway, and Mark and I are up and out of the cell before any more words can be said.
