I was sad, he made me happy.  I was angry, he calmed me down.  I was lonely; he came and sat by my side.  I loved him, and he loved me.  Now, I’m sad, he’s not here to make me happy.  I’m angry; he’s not here to calm me down.  I’m lonely; he’s not here to sit by my side.  I love him; he’s not here to love me back.  He’s not here anymore.  Ace…

I trudged through the rain, lonely, cold, and homeless.  I’ve always been in bad situations like this.  Ever since the discovery of half-breeds in society I have been an outcast.  Half-breeds are sub-species of humans that have other animals’ characteristics.  For example, I am a half-breed with white hair, wolf ears and a matching wolf tail.  But one more thing that sets me apart is I can transform into a wolf.  When I was really little, my parents started to notice my powers.  They gave me to relatives without telling them about my abilities.  Even so, I was obviously passed on quickly, I couldn’t exactly say ‘Hey nice to meet you, by the way do you have some chew toys because I get restless when I transform into a wolf, oh and, sorry if I start shedding, it gets extremely hot in the summer.’  Yeah, that would go over well, so I would be given to another relative.  I’ve been passed around my whole life, but my recent relatives found out about me from my past families and kicked me out.  Actually they didn’t even come to the airport to pick me up!  So that’s why I’m here on the side of the road, freezing.  This is something new for me, but I guess that I’ve mentally prepared myself for this day my whole life.  I burned with anger and irritation inside.  I wanted to run.  Run as long and fast as I could and then keep running.  My body shivered with the first signs of my transformation.  I began running, slowly at first, getting faster and faster till I was sprinting along the road.  With another large tremor, my body shifted, becoming stronger and faster.  I kept running at full speed in my sleek wolf form.  I felt myself calming down and ran faster.  I wished that I could go on running forever.  Unfortunately, my body eventually told me that it was time to rest.  I observed my surrounding for the first time since I began running and found myself in the middle of the city.  I found a small patch of trees and transformed back into my mostly human form.  The rain had stopped while I was running.  I lay down on the damp grass and fell asleep.

I awoke with a start; my keen wolf senses had noticed someone nearby.  I peeked through the bushes that I had fallen asleep behind.  Not good, it was a police officer, probably on patrol.  If I were found, I would be stuck into a lab where they would poke and prod until they found out exactly what made me such a freak.  I quickly slipped behind a nearby tree and transformed back into a wolf.  I was so much more agile in this form and I skillfully slunk past the officer.  I hid behind another tree and transformed back to a human.  I stuck on my beanie hat and tucked my tail into my worn out jeans and casually strode out into the hustle and bustle of the city.  I looked back and found that I had been sleeping in a public park.  I had been so tired last night that I hadn’t even noticed.  I turned back and caught a whiff of a most mouth-watering aroma.  I followed the smell to a hot dog stand.  I almost laughed at myself, had I been so hungry that I couldn’t even distinguish the smell of hot dogs?  I turned around and my stomach growled in protest.  I dug into my pockets and discovered a five-dollar bill.  I spun around and almost sprinted straight into the hot dog stand.  I quickly ordered two hot dogs with all the works and shoved the first one down as soon as the vender handed it to me.  I was a bit more humane when I ate the second one.  Forcing myself to savor every bite, I walked away from the stand and observed my surroundings.  There were stores and restaurants all around.  I pushed the last bite of hot dog into my mouth; I shoved my hands into my pockets and walked away.  I really didn’t know what I was doing.  I was a homeless 17-year-old girl with only three dollars to my name, walking around gawking at all the things I couldn’t afford.
