“Well lookie here!” The man teased.
“Either your very brave buddy, or very stupid,” he finished and both of the men guffawed.
“We both know which one of those this guy is,” I heard the other voice reply. I ducked deeper into the shadows out of the two men’s sights. I could hear the sound of slow footsteps approaching Ace and then a loud thump.
“Aaargh!” One of the men screamed out. I heard a flurry of more footsteps, thumping, and whacking. Then Ace cried out and I flinched back at the sound. I peaked out of the shadows and saw one of the men, a buff guy about 6’, pinning Ace to the ground by wrenching his wing at an odd angle.
“Knew you were very stupid,” said the other man, an even bigger, huskier guy than the first, as he pulled out a handgun from his holster. He pressed the gun against Ace’s temple and smirked.
“Bye bye, birdy,” he chuckled.
“Wait!” I yelled before I even had time to think. The husky man spun around and looked straight in my direction. He removed the gun from Ace’s temple and pointed it at me.
“Get out of the shadows, where I can see you!” He barked. I hesitantly looked at Ace and saw him shake his head at me. His eyes were pleading and desperate. The smaller soldier noticed Ace’s actions and tugged roughly on his captured wing causing him to let out a pathetic yelp. I bit my lip and looked once again at the larger man. He was still glaring in my general direction trying to make out a figure. I bit my lip and stiffly took a step forward out of the shadows. The soldier with the gun jumped at the sudden movement, but quickly composed himself and aimed the gun straight at my heart. My body reacted to the instinct of danger and I leaped to the side too fast for the man to react. I began changing into a wolf and heard Ace yell at me to stop, but it was too late, I was ready to kill!
I began growling at the two men in my new form and studied them cautiously as they stood there with their mouths gaping open. A low groan escaped Ace’s lips and the man that had pinned him down broke out of his trance.
“W-What the Hell!?” He yelled out fearfully.
“What is this girl!?” The other man responded. I stopped growling and glared at them in confusion, still maintaining my aggressive stance. What is up with these guys? Why are they so freaked out? I asked myself. Ace used the confusion to head-butt his captor, momentarily stunning him, and kick the gun out of the other soldier’s hand. He sprinted forward and scooped me up flapping frantically, trying to take off. My wolf instincts were yelling at me to get out of his arms and attack him, but I managed to control myself and change back. I glanced up at Ace and found him glaring straight ahead seriously. I decided it best to stay quiet and ask him the questions that were now banging around in my head later.
We got back to the base and Hinda wagged her eyebrows at me when she noticed the position Ace and I was in on our arrival. I quickly jumped out of Ace’s arms and swiftly walked to my bed. I plopped down and sighed. I looked around and noticed that almost everyone was gone. Blade noticed my confusion and came over.
“Artie and a couple other adults took the kids on a field trip to the zoo,” he stated simply. I nodded my head to show my understanding. I glanced around and noticed another thing, the electricity was back on. That must mean that Ace had fixed the electricity before coming to rescue me. I thought as I glanced over at Ace. He was whispering into Hinda’s ear and her brow began to furrow. Ace pulled away and she nodded following him into his room.
I fidgeted nervously for the entire time that Ace and Hinda were in Ace’s room. Would I get scolded for being caught by those soldiers today? Did something happen? I was so unnerved by their serious faces. Hinda and Ace were the happiest, smiliest people in the house! Something had to be up. I began teetering around in the small bookcase at the corner of the warehouse. If I read something, my mind would be preoccupied with something else besides the crazy questions running through my head. Just as I was settling in to Hush Hush, after I had stopped gawking at the cover model’s abs and laughing at the irony of having a book with a winged guy lying around, I was interrupted by a light tap on my shoulder. I whipped around in surprise, almost stabbing my eye out on one of Hinda’s antlers.
“Do you have a moment, we’ll explain in Ace’s room,” she gave me a forced smile and gestured to Ace’s door where he was leaning against the door’s frame. I set the book down on the tiny table and stood up. Hinda gave another forced smile and then turned away, walking briskly towards Ace’s room. I let out a determined sigh and followed.
