“Come on,” he said making his way towards the door. He began wrenching the door open with all his strength.
“What are you doing?” I asked in shock.
“You’ll see,” he said and with a final heave tore the door open. He turned back to me and picked me up. I sighed, oh boy, now I know what we’re doing. I looked out the door and was glad that Ace had chosen the side of the Ferris wheel that was facing away from the carnival to make his escape. People might get a little freaked out seeing a guy with wings jump out of the top of a Ferris wheel. Ace took a slight running start and leaped into the open sky. I bit my lip to keep down the scream building up in my throat. Ace opened his wings and we swooped up barely missing the ground. I gasped as we leveled out. We glided for a second.
“Umm, Hesper…” Ace said. I looked up and saw him struggling.
“Can you loosen your grip,” I quickly released my chokehold that I had on his neck and mumbled an embarrassed apology. He chuckled and we glided through the cold night.
By the time we returned it was around 12:30. Ace landed us on a side street by the entrance to the carnival. We walked in laughing and smiling. Ace stopped in his tracks and cringed at something straight ahead. I followed his gaze and found Hinda tapping her foot angrily and glaring at the both of us. I looked down guiltily. She huffed and briskly walked past us. We filed into the back of the group as we all made our way back to the base. We followed the intricate tunnels and finally reached headquarters. Blade came up to Ace and I and said in a low voice,
“Hinda wants to see you two in Ace’s room.” Ace nodded and led me towards the door. We entered and I looked around. The last time I was here, Ace had just woken up after being injured. I frowned at the memory and refocused onto the room. It was huge, like the size of a large classroom and messy. The walls were white and littered with posters of famous football players. He had a large desk with papers strewn all over it. His bed was blue and wasn’t made. And his floor was cluttered with clothes, more papers, books, etc. Hinda was leaning against the desk and looking down at the papers on it. She looked up as we walked in.
“What were you guys doing?!” she began.
“We were all worried sick, wondering where you were! And Ace, you shouldn’t be straining yourself after just recovering!” Ace flinched back after being addressed.
“And Hesper! I expected you to be more responsible than this! Why didn’t you try to stop him?!” she yelled at me. She paused and then sighed and sat down on the bed. She looked up at Ace.
“You know I care for you, like a son. I was frantic thinking I was going to lose you again after just getting you back,” she said in a pained voice. She reached up and hugged us both. She pulled back and looked into our eyes.
“Just don’t let it happen again, okay?” she finished sternly. We both nodded and she left the room. A few seconds of silence followed. I looked at Ace, a question tugging at the back of my mind. Like a mother? But she looks barely older than me.
“How old is Hinda?” I asked. Ace hummed and gripped his chin in thought.
“I think she’s around 28 now. Yeah that’s it 28, her and Blade’s anniversary is on her birthday,” he replied with confidence. My jaw hit the floor.
“She’s married to Blade?!” I asked in shock. Ace furrowed his brow.
“Yeah, didn’t you know?” he said.
“No, I had no idea,” I replied. I smiled, so that’s why they’re so close.
“Any other interesting couples?” I asked curiously.
“Well Artie has a fetish for Jiro,” he said seriously. I gasped in complete shock.
“NO WAY!!!” Ace’s face broke into a giant smile and he started laughing. I glared at him and he managed to catch his breath.
“Haha! The look on your face was priceless!” he said wiping tears out of his eyes. I scowled.
“Don’t worry Artie doesn’t have the hots for Jiro. He just respects him way much. Basically he worships him,” Ace said. I nodded in understanding. When I first met Artie, he did seem to respect Jiro, a lot.
“I think it’s because Jiro rescued Artie and brought him here,” said Ace flopping onto his bed.
“Rescued?” I asked sitting down next to Ace on the bed.
“Yeah, you see Artie grew up in a little rural village and Artie’s parents died when he was only a baby, so he’s lived in orphanages his whole life. When his half-breed characteristics started showing up, the entire village formed a mob and tried to kill him. Luckily Jiro happened to be passing by and saved him. They travelled together for about three years and ended up here. That was about twelve years ago, when Artie was nine,” Ace explained. I had no idea that Jiro and Artie had that kind of relationship. So Artie was saved by Jiro and has been with him ever since. How cute!
“What about everyone else, like Mace and Meo,” I asked curiously.
“Well Meo’s just the average outcast, troubled kid. We have a lot of those around here, but Mace…he was abused by his parents and relatives. That’s why he doesn’t talk too much,” said Ace sadly. I was shocked to find out that Mace had that kind of past.
“How did he get here?” I asked softly.
“I found him, on the street. It was raining and he was shivering in a blanket. When I asked him if he was okay, he looked up at me and I immediately knew that he was a half-breed by his ears. So I brought him back here. It took him a while to get used to this place, but I think he’s improved a lot especially since he’s met Artie and Meo,” said Ace. I nodded. We were both silent for a little while after that.
“Hey Ace,” I turned to find him asleep. I chuckled and pulled the blankets over him. I gently kissed his forehead, turned off the lights, and walked out of the room. I paused after closing the door; I wanted to ask him about his own life. I shrugged my shoulders, maybe next time, I thought and went to bed.
