I woke up to darkness.  I checked my tiny wristwatch, which read 9:00 am.  I swung my legs over the edge of my bed and stumbled in the pitch-black towards Ace’s room.  I felt a doorknob in front of me and knocked.  I heard an irritated groan and the bed creak.  Then came a giant crash and an unpleasant swear word.  I waited for a few seconds and before I got the chance to knock again, the door swung open.

         “Whoa!” I heard Ace say.

“Ace it’s me,” I reassured him before he could stumble into me.

         “Hesper?” he asked.

“What’s going on?  Why isn’t any lights on?” he continued.

“I don’t know,” I responded.  He gently pushed past me and continued into the main room.  My eyes had adjusted to the darkness and I watched as Ace clumsily made his way to a circuit box.  He opened it and squinted at he knobs.  He messed with them for a minute and then sighed in defeat.

“I have to go up and check the cable line,” he grumbled.  He walked towards me but stumbled on something.  I watched in horror as his body came closer and closer then bam!  We landed on the ground, Ace on top of me.  I was immediately aware of Ace’s bare upper body pressing against me and I froze.

“Oh my gosh!  I’m so sorry Hesper,” he said pushing himself up so that his hands were on either side of my head and he was leaning over me.  He paused, looked down at me, and blushed.  We both stared at each other.  I watched fascinated once again by his beautiful, rainbow-speckled eyes.  I moved down to his strong, hard chest and abs.  My eyes were then drawn to his muscular arms and back up to his eyes.  He was looking at me curiously, seeming to study me as well.  We stayed that way for a few moments longer.  Ace began leaning down, his lips getting closer and closer to mine.  I was ready to oblige to what he wanted.  Then I heard someone clear their throat to the right of us.  I whipped my head over and saw Hinda looking down at us with her hands on her hips.

“No, this…it’s not…well,” I tried to form a proper sentence blushing madly.  Ace quickly stood up and lifted me to my feet.  Hinda began chuckling and walked up to us.  She placed a hand on each of our shoulders.

“You can do that anytime you want, but let’s take care of this power outage first,” she said still chuckling.  I looked up at Ace and saw him blushing as bright as me.  He nodded and stiffly walked out the main door without a word.  I let out a loud sigh.  Hinda looked over at me with one eyebrow raised.  I shook my head disregarding her.  She scowled at me.

“Why don’t you go help Ace then,” she said smirking and pushing me towards the door.  I began to protest, but she cut me off.

“There shouldn’t be a problem since nothing happened,” she smiled widely at me, winked, and then shut the door on me, locking me outside.  I sighed and looked down the giant sewer way.  Now what?  I don’t even know which way to go.  I sighed again and chose to go to the right.  Hey!  Why not?  I thought angrily.  I stopped and leaned against the wall after walking for what seemed to have been hours.  Great!  Ace was probably already back at headquarters by now.  I looked for anything familiar in my surroundings and frowned.  I was in a sewer tunnel; everything looks the same for Christ’s sake!  I froze as my keen ears perked up and twitched towards the tunnel to my left.  I heard voices and the scuffling of more than one pair of feet.  I pressed myself against the wall and listened.

“The information says that somewhere in these tunnels, there is a half-breed base,” one man said.  The other man sighed loudly.

“I hate these stupid clean-up missions!  It’s always troublesome to deal with those stubborn half-breeds.  Why can’t they all just drop dead?” the other man complained.

“I heard that this is the group that John’s unit attacked a few members from in the woods outside of the city a month ago,” the first one said.

“Ssh!  I think I see something against the wall up ahead,” the second man whispered.  My body stiffened up.  I began mentally freaking out and going over my options.  Okay, so these guys are most likely members of HACK and want to kill me.  Trying to make friends probably won’t work.  Getting past them is a big no, too.  Trying to fight them is my best option.  Oh my God!  I’m so dead.  I tried my best to calm down and breathe.  I quickly mustered up my courage and started to inch into the view of the two soldiers.  I felt a hand wrap around my wrist and halt my progress.

“Aaa-“ I began to scream but another hand shot up and covered my mouth.  I began to struggle, squirming violently hoping to get out of the person’s grip.

“Ssh,” the stranger breathed into my ear.  I immediately froze, that shush sounded familiar.  I twisted in the person’s arms so that I was facing them.  Sure enough, I found Ace smiling down at me.  I grabbed his hand and pried it from my mouth.

“What are you doing!?” I hissed.  He ignored me and glared seriously at the two HACK members.  I gasped and scooted into Ace’s chest.  In my surprise, I had forgotten about them.  As the two men got closer, Ace shoved me behind him and out of their sights.  The bright light of one of the soldier’s flashlights hit Ace and I heard the deep chuckle of the man.
