Why You Don't Mess With Science
It's here. It's finally here. Sophie had waited for this moment for so long and everyone knew it. Anxiety and excitement bubbled inside of her chest. Sophie had the strongest urge to do a million things at once. Everyone dreams of going and living in their favorite realm of fiction, yet now, the dream was about to come true. Her plan was fool proof. Sophie had come up with multiple ways of controlling the portal from the inside and she had a friend coming over just in case. To make her plan work, Sophie just needed one more thing. The doorbell rang with a loud gong, jarring Sophie from her thoughts. Sophie raced downstairs so fast that she was a blur of colors, and opened the door. There, sat a tiny box that held one microscopic screw. Sophie ran back up the stairs and slammed open the door. With trembling hands, she popped in the screw and pressed the ON button. The last thing on her mind was how her friend, Lana, was nowhere to be found. With the gears of the machine whirling, the portal opened. Sophie took a deep breath, tucked back a piece of brown hair, and stepped into the unknown.
Shades of black, blue, and purple swarmed around Sophie. She had predicted this, in fact, she predicted a lot of things. However, the one thing that she didn't predict was the fact that there was no air. Pain flared throughout her body and all she wanted to do was scream. When she tried on the contrary, nothing happened. Almost as soon has the pain started, it vanished. Suddenly, Sophie found herself in midair and she quickly face planted into the grass. She quickly spat out the grass that had gotten into her mouth as a thought struck her. I did it. I actually did it. With an insane grin plastered across Sophie's face, she shakily stood up to look where she had landed. She was on a green hill that had a valley full of strawberries. Next to her was a gigantic pine tree that had some sort of ugly, yellow wool rug on it. Sophie glanced once more at the valley below and this time she didn't just see a strawberry field. This time, she saw numerous cabins, an open air dining hall, training grounds, and a lake. She nearly fainted with excitement as she realized where she was. She was in the world of Percy Jackson, at Camp Half-Blood. Without a single rational thought, Sophie ran down the hill and into the camp. There, she was greeted by a girl with storm grey eyes and blonde hair: Annabeth Chase. Knowing that only Annabeth would understand, Sophie quickly explained to her how she got here before she could say a word.
"Well, uhhhh...."Annabeth stuttered," I guess that makes sense. Anyways, welcome to Camp Half-Blood."
With the insane grin back, Sophie couldn't wait until she could explore all the worlds of fiction she wanted to. She thought of The Mortal Instruments and The Infernal Devices and the Shadowhunters that lived there. She thought of her own book and many other beautiful works of fiction. Sophie could have gone on for days but she decided that it would be best to stop before her brain exploded. Thankfully, Annabeth jarred her from her thoughts.
"Yikes, clam down. You look like your about the explode or something." She stated.
"I'm fine." Sophie breathed. She had absolutely no idea where to start, but Annabeth seemed to pick up on what she was thinking once more.
"Hey, why don't we start with a tour of the camp first?" She questioned.
"That would be amazing." Sophie mused. For the rest of the day, time was a blur and soon the sun was setting across the Long Island shore. Quickly deciding that it was time to go to reality, Sophie walked up the hill once more, expecting the portal to be there. To her surprise, there was nothing there. No portal, nothing. Not even a tiny rip. At first Sophie was slightly confused, but now, that subtle confusion turned to a wild fire of fear. She tried and tried again to open the portal home, but only portals to other worlds popped up. Finally, Sophie gave up and slumped to the ground as she knew in her heart that she would be trapped in these fake worlds until the day she died.
There is no way that Sophie made a portal, no way. At least, that's what Lana thought before she went to her friend's house. She had knocked on the door several times but not one person answered. After letting herself in with the key under the matt, Lana searched all through the house and still found no one. With a slight tremble of fear in her walk, Lana soon came across Sophie's bed room. In there she found a cold, metal machine standing in her room. NO, no. She couldn't have gone already. Could she? Lana desperately tried to think of a logical answer but her gut told her that Sophie was trapped. Let's face it, Lana knew nothing about the portal and how it worked, let alone where Sophie was. Yet, Lana knew she had to try. She found herself pacing and pacing around the room until her feet started to hurt. Suddenly, Lana stepped on something very small and sharp.
"OUCH!" Lana shrieked. She bent down to check what the object was. As it turned out, it was a tiny screw. And above it was an empty slot. An idea clicked in Lana's mind. It was a small chance, but every chance came with a small amount of hope and that was all Lana needed. Carefully, she inserted the screw and looked for an ON button. Soon after, the machine was whirling and the portal opened. It was so tempting to go into the portal, like huge presents under the tree on Christmas morning, but Lana knew that she better stay outside and wait for Sophie. It seemed like eternity of nothing. Lana was about to give up when the dark veil of a portal rippled.
There was nothing to live for. All means of reality was lost in these worlds so why bother. There was only darkness and the only light was fear. Why live? Sophie pondered. She was in the world of Maximum Ride but what did it matter. Sophie sighed to herself. She just wanted it all to end but she had no idea on what to do. Out of boredom, she opened another portal to any random world. She was about to step through when she noticed something. The portal seamed different, she had no idea how she knew, she just did. The portal looked like..... the first one. The portal looked like the portal back to reality. Sophie smiled in what seemed like a lifetime. With her back to the portal and a grin on the face, she fell into the portal. She fell back to reality.
She fell with a thud on the carpeted floor. Lana couldn't believe it , after nearly six hours of waiting, she was here. Sophie looked up to Lana with clear eyes.
"Sup." She croaked.
That's all it took. Soon Lana was hugging and crying on Sophie. She sobbed and sobbed until she could sob no more. When Lana looked up however, her eyes were filled with excitement.
"So, what did you do?"
"Everything."
