A Beginning of Sorts
Beep, beep, beep went the alarm clock.
"Ugh, shut up please," Kaylee muttered to herself. She forcefully opened her eyes, wishing so much she could fall back asleep. Her eyes felt crusty, and the sunlight escaping past the blinds of her window made her squint. Not to mention, Kaylee could have probably scared the life out of some little kids with the monstrosity that was made of her blonde, and quite tangled, hair. Cursing colorfully under her breath, Kaylee slammed down the OFF button on her damned alarm.
"Sweet relief!" she sighed.
The two dogs were at her feet, one black and the other white, were sleeping peacefully, which made Kaylee envious of them. With a loud thump, Kaylee grabbed her pillow, smashed it on the bed, and dropped her sleepy self on in. Five more minutes, she thought to herself. She wasn't really a morning person. Well, those five minutes of extra sleep became thirty, whoops, and soon Kaylee's mom was calling her to go. Kaylee shot out of bed. Frantically, she fumbled for her phone, desperately hoping to find that is was only 6:25 am. It was 6:45.
"Shit!"
She ran like a mad man, grabbing random clothes off of the floor and the edge of her bed. As quick as lightning, she grabbed a bra, a white tank top, some black leggings, her gray jacket, and finally a pair of mismatched socks. She flew out of her room almost completely dressed, but she was shoving her socks on while she ran down the stairs. However, too disheveled already from her rough morning, what Kaylee didn't see was her pair of sneakers sitting at the bottom of the staircase. She tripped, no, she face planted. Hard.
"Mother f--"
"I'm here, so don't you dare finish that curse," her mother replied, amused by her daughters state of dismay.
"Sorry," Kaylee meekly said.
Kaylee tried to get up gracefully, attempting to regain her dignity, but her face was as red as a tomato. Her mother chuckled once more. With a shaky smile at her mom, Kaylee scurried off to grab her backpack. Thank goodness I packed everything I needed last night, she thought with relief. When she turned around, her mother had already left through the front door, and was waiting in the car. At least that's what Kaylee hoped. She walked towards the door, and stopped. She took a deep breath, an attempt to calm her rattling nerves; it only worked slightly. The door opened quickly before her, as she may has well slammed it open. Walking into the cool air cleared her head, much to her gratitude. Also to her gratitude, her mother was patiently waiting for her in the car. Kaylee plopped herself, and her things into the front seat, shaking her head to herself and smiling as she marveled at her short morning. After greeting her mother, and receiving a quick peck on her forehead, the two took off, and as Kaylee sunk into the seat, she thought to herself, well it can't get any worse today, right?
If Kaylee was going by actual school hours, then she wasn't late at all. Actually, I never said she was late to school, only that her mother called her to go. You see, Kaylee's mother had received a new job that started earlier than the old one, and started the same time as Kaylee's school. So, the two would ride together in the morning, with Kaylee's mom dropping her off before driving to work. So no, Kaylee was not late. If anything, she was early, by almost half an hour. However, Kaylee had forgotten these facts in her flustered, though slightly calmed down, state. Racing out of the car, Kaylee was surprised and instantly relieved to see many students milling about instead of one or two trying to outrun the bell. Kaylee smiled and shook her head again to herself at her craziness, loving it completely. Energized, Kaylee walked off into the school on search of her group of friends. Yet, the area where she and her friends usually hung out was barren. Kaylee didn't see anyone that she knew there. She was puzzled at the sight. Normally, almost all of her friends would be there at that time. Deciding that she would just wait until they showed up, Kaylee pulled out her phone and began playing a pottery game. Ten minutes had passed, and yet not one of her friends had shown up. Now completely confused, Kaylee texted each one of her friends, asking where they were, but started to walk away from the spot. She was walking to her other close friend, hoping she would be there. Thankfully, she was, but she was surrounded by her own little group of friends. Of course she would be, why wouldn't she be? Stop being nervous Kaylee. She wasn't going to lie, Kaylee felt slightly awkward around her close friend's, Caitlyn, group. They were slightly like Kaylee's own friends, weird and funky, but they could be a bit too blunt, mean even. At least that's how she felt, but she couldn't say what they felt. She would stay though, because they weren't necessarily bad people, and Kaylee enjoyed hanging out with Caitlyn and her other friend Tanyah.
"Hey Kails!" Caitlyn called out, and Kaylee rolled her eyes at the dumb nickname Caitlyn made for her. Tanyah saw her next and she and Caitlyn snuggled her in a hug. Tanya's head scarf and Caitlyn's long bangs tickled her face. Kaylee smiled in the warmth of their hug. The three girls had known each other since sixth grade but never really had the same schedule, only having one or two classes together at the most. But, the girls didn't let this put a wall between them and, even though thick and thin, they were still friends. Aside from Tanyah and Caitlyn, Kaylee wasn't too close with the other people in the group. There were the three guys, who were Jayden, Phillipio, and Antwan, and the four girls who were Mikayla, Galilea, Tanyah, and lastly, Caitlyn. Tanyah and Caitlyn didn't ask why she was there or where Kaylee's friends were, they just incorporated her into the group's sometimes questionable conversations. She felt slightly uncomfortable at the boys' glances. None of them were indecent, but like rather they were seeing her for the first time. She had been to the group before, but it looked like the boys had just seen her for the first time. Yes, hi. I exist, thank you very much. Kaylee continued to converse with the girls in the group, somewhat ignoring the boys, until they decided to suddenly lose interest in their phones and actually talk. Real shocker right they're ladies and gentlemen. Kaylee seemingly under attack from the boys with questions, some dirty and others not so much, causing Tanyah and Caitlyn to save her butt. Before her salvation however, one boy with icy blue eyes and pale blonde hair, an appearance that mirrored her own, asked her more questions than Jayden or Antwan. Caitlyn noticed this. She also noticed how not one of his questions were dirty. All were clean and genuine. Caitlyn understood that Phillipio, or rather Karter as he liked to be called, was generally somewhat of a quiet person. Nevertheless, she and Tanyah put an end to the boys' questions as Tanyah started to unzip Jayden's backpack causing him to exclaim-
"Can you not?" much to Mikayla's amusement. Caitlyn continued the parade by smacking Antwan across the arm, to which he promptly hit her back, and sent a warning glare at Phillipio.
"Stop it boys, especially you Phillipio, you guys are just trying to weird her out," she scolded (but little did she know it was only two thirds true)
Phillipio- cough, sorry I mean Karter- groaned, "Can you please call me by my middle name, Caitlyn?" Karter asked, who was slightly embarrassed by the use of his first name.
There, I called you Karter, happy now? Kaylee was about to stop Tanyah and Caitlyn's assault on the boys when the bell for first period rang.
"Well, it's time to go," Karter started,"but, um, do you want to sit with us at lunch, Kaylee?"
Almost the entire group stared at Karter in surprise as discreetly as they could, and Kaylee was shocked at his question. All Caitlyn did was glance coolly at Karter.
"Um," Kaylee stuttered," I'll have go to see, but thanks"
And with that, Kaylee briskly walked back to her class, not glancing back once. Caitlyn didn't get a chance to say goodbye, but as she watched her friend walk away, she saw Karter's shoulders sag just a tiny bit out of the corner of her eye. Caitlyn said goodbye to her other friends quickly and began walking to her first period class with Galilea. Yet, she couldn't help but to think to herself, today is going to be interesting, isn't it?
