Once in a Dream

once in a dream I saw a

shape more lovely

than any earthly thing,

it knelt to me and

cradled me and lit a

candle in my kitchen.

I saw its colors

reveal in the light—

blue and gray, folding

in the halo around us

and I cried and held its hands

or what would have been hands

in waking.

"beauty" I said breathless

then it bowed its head

and stalked away

to the couches in the

living room

where it made a blanket

tent.

inside I saw shifting

then a moth fluttered out

and into my pale arms.

when I opened the drapes

I saw it there

as if hiding from me.

then we crept into the

moonlight

of my terraced black front yard

where it withdrew a theremin

and taught me how to play.

once we quieted

it gestured to lie down.

I did and we watched a plane

cross the sky above us

and another

and one more.

they drone low before the planets

and above the coming snow.
