Lisa, Please

20 6 10

You laugh at me and turn your gaze to the sky
And I see the telephone wires reflect in your eyes.
Lisa please tell me I'll see you again
Lisa please tell me I'm more than a friend

On a tree-lined street you took my hand
And said, "I'm going to trust you; I know that I can."
You asked if I could keep a secret, once told
But before I replied, you sat down in the road.

You started to cry, you said you'd made a mistake.
You said at the time it had felt so good to make.
I said, "Lisa I know, don't cry, it's okay"
But at the sound of my voice, you just turned away.

The next day you went on as if nothing was wrong;
You climbed into my car and played loud tuneless songs.
Will we ever again speak of your "mistake"? Is it dust?
It's hurting me Lisa, can't you see that? You must.

Remember that party where you drank far too much?
When you danced close beside me, I went warm at your touch.
Lisa I doubt this is purely platonic;
I wish one of us could stand to be honest.

Tonight as the sun sinks, there's that same numbing ache.
You never held my heart, so why does it break?
Lisa please tell me I'll see you again—
Lisa please tell me I'm more than a friend.
