•Devyn's POV•
Connor hands me an ice pack with a small hand towel wrapped around it. I smile as I bring the ice pack to my cheek, letting the coldness kind of numb the pain from the bruise. I look over at Connor, who's walking over to me.
He then crouches in front of where I'm sitting on the couch, softly grabbing my arms, examining my bruises. "Dev... how old are these bruises?" My brown eyes meet his blue ones. He can tell by just the look in my eyes that they've been there for a while. Siblings are like that, me and Connor are anyways, we can tell when each other is upset or something is wrong or along those lines. He stands up and nods his head towards the door, "Let's go to the store, let's get you some makeup, and let's get some ice cream." I smile and nod. We walk out to his car and I quickly remember I didn't bring like any money, only about $50 and when you travel, that's not much at all. I keep it to myself while we head out.
On the drive there, we crack up jokes and make fun of each other, making the air seem less tense.
We arrive at a Walmart that's still open and I run in, just grabbing the cheapest foundation I could in my skin tone and running out, Connor grabbed some ice cream and we met at a cash register. I sigh when we get through and back into the car.
The drive home is a little more quiet. You can definitely tell both of us are getting really tired.
When we get back, Connor takes the ice cream and I put my makeup in my little backpack. "Hey, where are the blankets?" He points to a closet, I nod and grab a random blanket that feels soft enough. I then head back to the couch and yell to Connor, "Hey! Just wake me up in the morning to get ready and go! Goodnight bro!" I turn off the small lamp near the couch, and the big light in the living room.
I settle in under the blanket to hear, "Okay sis! Goodnight!" I close my eyes and drift off into sleep.
Next thing I know, I'm laying on the floor next to the couch, rolled up in the blanket. I hear the alarm go off and groan. I just roll up more, making myself a burrito in the blanket. I hear footsteps after the alarm is turned off. I look to the back of the couch from the floor and see Connor's sleepy eyes look down at me as he laughs. I smile innocently and wiggle around, trying to free myself from the blanket. I hop up and brush myself off. I walk into the bathroom and look in the mirror.
The bruise on my face, slightly darker, starting to already heal. I look at my arms, the bruises almost gone completely. Then, the giant blonde mess on my head. I sigh as I get ready to get in the shower. I look in the shower to see there's already a bunch of stuff for me. I get in and let the warm water wash over me, relaxing my slightly tense body.
After washing my body and hair, I get out and get dressed, in a pale green t shirt and some ripped jeans, my hair wrapped in a towel. I look for a hairdryer but I can't find one, so I just dry my hair as much as possible with the towel and brush it afterwards. Once it doesn't look like a rat's nest, I brush it to the side and smooth it out, putting the long hair into a side braid. Running my hand over the hair for bumps, I looks at myself in the mirror, noticing the bruise on my face. I hunt down my makeup and then I brush on my foundation, making sure to blend it seamlessly into my neck and face. Through the makeup, there's a slightly darker spot, but hopefully nobody notices today. I walk out from the bathroom, only to hear a "Head's up!" Then I have an apple thrown at me. I quickly grab it before it hits me.
"Connor!" I yell, walking over to him.
"What? It's almost time to go. Get you stuff and meet me in the car in 5." He walks off, grabbing a small bag and his key, shooting finger guns as he exits the front door. I hurry and clean out my backpack, putting my wallet, phone charger, and a few other necessities in there. Once everything is packed, I run out to the car.
I let out a breath, as I had ran out to the car. I buckle my seatbelt and facepalm as I realize I left the apple on the coffee table.
Connor laughs and looks over at me. "What'd you do this time little sis?" I smile cheekily as I put my head in my hands again.
"I left my breakfast back at the house." My hands slightly muffling my words.
I only hear Connor scoff and we take a random turn that seemed to be off guard by both of us, as if it was a small detour, "We'll stop at the Starbs and you can get something to eat and I'll pay." We pull up to the drive through and I order my usual.
We continue the drive to the office. As we drive, I happily eat, a smile on my face. Deep down, my stomach sinks, I'm nervous for today. I've never met these people and what if they hate me right off the bat? I try to shake the thoughts out of my head, yet they still somehow find a place to hide.
When we pull up to a big building, with other buildings alike it surrounding, my heart pounds in my chest. My breathing starts to pick up speed and I start silently freaking out. I then feel Connor grab my arm, calming me down slightly. He looks at me and I look back, and we nod at each other. I really feel like he's babying me, but it's how he helps me in his own way. We get out and walk into the building, I mentally prepare for what is going to come from today.
