"Stop watching this crap, Didi, It's no use" said his best friend Li Zi.
It was almost 10pm and they were at Dylan's hospital room waiting for the doctor and the MRI results. Li Zi had surprised Dylan by coming to watch his first game of the season but little did he know he would end up at the ambulance comforting his friend while they transported him to the hospital.
"Good night, Mr Wang" The doctor said as he entered the room with a bunch os scans. He carefully placed them on the white screen. Dylan felt his whole body tense.
"G'night, doc. So, how bad is it?"
"You've got a severe tear on your rotator cuff. The tendon was already pretty strained from your repetitive exercises but after you dunked the ball and fell on the floor last night, it couldn't hold any longer. It was just the icing on the top of the cake. Considering your background and your condition, you'll need a surgery."
Dylan went pale and Li Zi let out a breath he didn't even know he was holding in.
"I need to be back soon. Can you fix this immediately?"he asked.
"Unfortunately, no. If you were a normal person, with no athletic agenda, and no professional implications, I would be happy to perform the surgery. But since that's not the case, I can't be the one to do it. It's too risky." He looked genuinely sad for Dylan as he continued.
"Even If I did bend the rules and performed the surgery, It wouldn't be 'fixed' right away. The recovery from this surgery is complex and involves a lot of rest and physiotherapy. And from what I know, it takes at least 9 months"
His mind started to buzz and he could swear he was being transported to another place.
He couldn't be away that long. Specially at the beginning of the season. 9 months at NBA were like ages in regular time. It was sports suicide.his best friend's voice pushed him out of his reverie.
"Excuse me, doctor, but do you know someone who can perform this surgery?"
"Here? no. But, There's a very good orthopaedic surgeon in Shanghai specialised in rotator cuff. I met her at a congress last year. I have her card here somewhere..." he spoke as he began to look for something inside his wallet.
Dylan's head turned so fast that his neck cracked. Pleased don't be her, please don't be her, he thought. He could bear anyone to see him in this situation, except her. He was starting to believe that he was indeed paranoid to think that she would be the only surgeon in Shanghai, when the doctor gave him the card.
"... Her name is Shen Yue".
