PHOEBE POV:
~Flashback to the beginning of the day~
"Sweetie, you are sure you don't want to go out with your friends or girlfriends? You know, instead of taking your old mother out, who by the way have to go to work." With a smile, I jocularly commented.
They both laughed, "Mom, you are absolutely not old, and the answer is without a doubt a yes. We want and would prefer to go out with you not our friends or some girlfriends as you've so elegantly put it." Wyatt, my outspoken boy, responded.
"Are you asking me out, baby boy?" Attempting quite hard to restrain myself from cracking up, I sheepishly inquired. Unfortunately, I apparently did not do such an excellent job at hiding my smile. They saw right through my façade and played along.
Sharing a knowing look, they bowed halfway in front of me, "Yes, we are my lady. Will you, my beautiful lady accept our invitation and do us the honour of going out with us for lunch today? We will pick you up."
Wyatt and Teo uttered at the same time as if they have practised this line a hundred times before asking me out for lunch today. Taking hold of my hands, they raised it to their mouth and laid a gentle kiss on the back of my hand. As cute as it may all seem, trust me sometimes it can be creepy and annoying how both of them say or think the same thing at the exact same time.
All of it was undoubtedly extremely sweet and prideful to me as a mother, knowing I have raised two charming and respectful gentlemen. However, given the state of the moment, it was too much for me to hold and I finally burst out laughing.
After several minutes went by I was finally able to compose myself and stop clutching my stomach due to laughing so hard. They were both smiling, glad to see their attempts to make me laugh, smile, happy and relax worked. Although I must admit I am often successful at covering up my emotions, at hiding my stress, frustration and distress from my kids or anyone else, my boys seemed to have noticed I was further on edge from my work. I guess things don't go as smoothly as initially plan, and my usual perfect façade begins to crumble into pieces; I'm only human after all.
"It was fun to relax and all, but I need to head to the office and catch up with my works if I want to be able to have lunch with you boys. Also remember, do not talk to strangers if you end up waiting for me, or to even ask for me from the people in the company for that matter."
The boys gave me a look which I've come to recognise way too easily these days. I understood they were curious to know why I always say these types of things whenever they offer to come to pick me up for lunches. However, throughout the years they have also learned I was not going to answer them, at least not directly.
~Now~
Smiling at the pleasant memory of what had happened this morning, I was feeling much happier regardless of still being inside the company elevator going down to meet Wyatt and Teo.
