driving away from johnny's house, maddie was insane with worry. she felt like she had betrayed her little sister, in a way, but also felt like spending that time with johnny confirmed everything she had ever thought about him.

he was normally a flirt, a charmer. he hooked up with popular girls numerous times because that's all he thought he deserved, all he thought he was worthy of. then he met kenzie, and everything changed.

in a way, it was bound to happen eventually– the breakup. their feelings for each other were so intense that neither of them could have handled the situation properly. if they kept on the way they were, they could have been married and kenzie pregnant at 18.

they both deserved to have a life beyond each other; they needed to be able to function apart as well as together. their breakup was proving how emotionally invested they were in each other– how much they cared about the other person.

maddie was gutted for the both of them that they had lost each other– but she had a plan formulating in her brain, and she hoped it was going to work.

before she knew it she'd parked in her driveway, and walked up go the front door. she greeted her parents and then headed to the lounge with kenzie. she had ice on her ankle, and was elevating it, ready for her physio appointment the next day.

kenzie shuffled over on the couch, and maddie stretched out next to her.

"tonight was awful." kenzie started by saying, eyes firmly glued on the tv which was displaying old reruns of the show friends.

maddie nodded. "i'm sorry. i know you miss him."

kenzie pursed her lips, determined not to cry while having this conversation. "it's getting harder and harder to remember why i can't be with him. all i can think of is all of our good memories, just playing in my head like a goddamned movie."

"what are the reasons you cant be with him. list a few." maddie prompted.

"because he hurt me. because he called me a name that i found really insulting. because he humiliated me. because we spent a lot of time together and that made everyone around us upset. because we've never been in proper relationships before and we didn't know how to handle it."

maddie nodded, playing with her little sisters hair. "now list the good reasons." she said softly.

it took mackenzie a while, but she eventually started to talk. "he makes me laugh a lot. like, tears-streaming-down-my-face and i-can't-breathe laughing. he knows me inside out. he gets me. he... understands, you know? our personalities are similar and it makes me laugh how he's cocky as hell. but he's not just a laugh, he's really kind, and not many people see that. he did a lot for me. and he's good with kids, and good with our parents, and you, and he's also... like, really good at kissing. i think it was the kindness that got me eventually, though. somehow he just knew when i was upset, or not in the mood, or when i needed to nap. and if i did want to nap, then he would curl up in my bed and open his arms and we would just sleep. even if he wasn't tired. and if i was upset, then he'd try his hardest to like, make me laugh, or smile. and i never got sick of him, he was always just there. like, a steady presence in my life, and i loved him for that because he genuinely made an effort."

maddie blew out a breath. "wow." she finally said.

kenzie sheepishly grimaced. "and now i feel like an ass, because i just rejected him, again, when i clearly still love him more than i hate him."

"i don't think you have to worry about him losing his feelings, kenzie." maddie spoke slowly. "i- ah, i dropped him home tonight."

kenzie looked confused. "why?"

"because if he drove home after what he did he most likely would have crashed his fucking jeep-truck-thing and died."

kenzie looked even more confused. "explain." she demanded.

"i walked into the parking lot to go home. saw him there. he punched the side of his car– with both hands i might add– and then just sorta... like fell on the ground? and he was crying, and his knuckles were bleeding, and i couldn't just leave him there, so i told him i was driving him home and he just gave me his keys so i drove."

mackenzie had tears running down her cheeks. "thats it?"

"pretty much." maddie smiled weakly. "i told him to take care of his hands, because they were bleeding and all bruised, and then we both said goodbye."

mackenzie smiled back, laughing despite her tears. "he needs to stop punching stuff when he gets mad. first it was his wall, then hayden, now his beloved car." she spoke fondly.

"maybe you should tell him that." maddie said.

mackenzies smile vanished. "no. not... yet."

"okay." maddie sighed, patting her sisters cheek. "you let me know as soon as you are ready to talk to him."

"okay." mackenzie squeaked, and maddie left the room.
