if there was one thing hayden summerall hated most in this world, it was being left out of things. being dropped, or uninvited, or purposely excluded from a pair.
he hated it.
thinking about it now, it probably stemmed from his three older brothers; dylan, hunter and jimmy. he was much younger than all of them, and when he was little he would try to run around and keep up with them– but to no avail. they would taunt him, tease him, annoy him, and alienate him when he would finally run off to his mom and dad crying.
growing up, hayden had really related to johnny in a way he'd never really related to a friend, ever. johnny had two older sisters and one younger; he knew exactly what it was like to live with people you find annoying and frankly, stupid.
throughout high school, hayden had done more stupid shit with johnny than he had with anyone else in his entire life. they'd skipped school together, attended classes together, and played pranks on teachers, ex-girlfriends, and even mutual friends that were pissing them off. they'd played basketball, football and volleyball together since elementary, and during sports games they were an undefeatable combination, wholly trusting in the other to back them up when they needed. they'd gone to parties together, talked about girls together, gone shopping for numerous prom's together, and they'd worked jobs together. they'd driven to school together, snapchatted each other, gone to the gym together, gone to the beach, river and pools together– every single day in their lives since elementary school they'd spent at least an hour in each others company.
and then along came mackenzie ziegler.
it was alright at first- they weren't so serious then. they'd text here, snapchat there, facetime every now and again, but hayden still had his best friend.
that was until they met up after his football game, and he'd taken her on a date. at first hayden thought it was just sex, but it became clear to him after a while that it wasn't– especially when nadia told him she'd seen them at mcdonalds together at almost 1am.
soon enough they were spending the weekends together, posting online about how they were always hanging out, and hayden had become excluded.
which he hated.
for hayden, the major downside of being best friends with johnny, was that lauren was off limits and always would be– but god, he'd always liked her. in a game of kiss-whoever-you-find-in-the-pitch-black of the orlandos basement (at a middle school party,) they'd made made out, and had liked each other ever since.
he loved and hated hanging out with her after that party; loved because he enjoyed her company, but hated because he thought he could never have her. johnny was far too possessive and didn't want to lose hayden as a friend.
when finally, in their last year of high school, johnny had become preoccupied with kenzie, he left hayden at his house with only laur to hangout with. after years of pent up desire and pure want they'd hung out, just them, and it was perfect. the next day, he'd asked her out on a date, and johnny, too obsessed with his own love life, didn't even seem to care that much.
that's when hayden started to notice something was wrong.
he talked to many others, all who felt the same way about the pair. they were suffocating everyone around them. they were pushing away others that only wanted to keep them close. they were pushing away people that loved them.
nadia, although plastering on a happy face, had been crying herself to sleep according to ruby rose.
maddie, even preoccupied with her own boyfriend, was upset about the little amount of time she got to spend with her sister nowadays.
lauren, knowing how upset hayden and nadia were, was stressing out on their behalf, always trying to make them feel better.
mandla, being gay, had been almost shut out of kenzies life simply due to the fact he was a boy.
maisy, shy and hurting, was insecure because she didn't think she'd even find someone that liked her.
johnny's own mom was annoyed at the way he'd been acting; leaving first thing in the morning and coming back late at night (or the next morning) after being with his girlfriend.
their coaches were annoyed at johnnys inattentiveness. mackenzies cheer girls were all unmotivated, and sick of the way mackenzie gushed about having a boyfriend. their teachers were sick of telling the pair to stop talking and to stop making out in the halls. their parents were upset, siblings worried, and friends stressing out over their relationship.
and everyone else could see it but them. wrapped up in their own little bubble, they were't realizing who they were hurting– but hayden had a plan– he was going to pop their bubble and make them understand who they'd hurt.
