I reached out for something to hold on to and got up, slowly trying to move step by step. I used to spend my days at the training room. I needed to walk again, urgently. I've already spent too much time at the hospital.
And I've already made some effort. Only yesterday, I was able to walk from my bed to the bathroom on my own.
I knew, that was nothing to be proud of. I was a thirty four year old woman who was learning to walk again.
Yeah, well done, Kate!
But everyone behaved like it was something special, a wonder.
"Dr. Williams?"
I looked up and recognized nurse Roberts in the doorway.
"There's a visitor for you", she added.
I nodded slightly.
"I'll be there soon", I replied and faked a smile.
"Do you need any help?", she asked anxiously as she watched me walking back to my wheelchair.
"No, I'm fine", I answered and moved through the room.
I recognized her nodding slightly before she left me alone again.
Everyone tried to help me. I knew they were just caring about me but I didn't want their help. I had to do this on my own.
"Come on, legs", I mumbled quietly, "Move!"
"Are you okay?", I suddenly heard his soft voice.
Immediately, I looked up to him and stared right at his brown golden sparkling eyes.
"Yeah, just... Learning to walk", I said smirkingly.
"Well then", he mumbled and half smiled at me.
We used to pretend like nothing has happened. But still it was strange when he was around.
"How's it going?", he asked curiously and walked around.
"Getting better", I replied quickly, "Yeah, it only takes me ten minutes to move five steps. So, I think you can say it's getting pretty serious."
Immediately, he started to laugh.
"I'm glad you didn't loose your sense of humor", he added happily.
"Things could be worse", I countered jokingly, "I could be dead. I should be thankful not to be, so I'm making the best of my second chance."
"Trust me, I'm thankful you're alive more than anyone else", he whispered quietly.
I blushed. He was already everywhere in my head. That was something I couldn't deny.
Suddenly, I stumbled and fell. I closed my eyes, preparing myself for hitting the floor but I got caught by some strong hands reaching out for me.
I opened my eyes again and stared right into his big brown eyes.
"Nathan", I gasped, trying to catch my breath, "Thank you."
I felt my heart beating rapidly.
Gosh, he smelled so good! His scent was truly irresistible.
"Am I making you nervous?", he whispered smirkingly and helped me getting up again.
"Noway", I countered and ran my fingers through my hair before he gently placed me in my wheelchair.
"Good, I already expected the worst..."
I playfully punched his shoulder and laughed.
"Ouch", he mumbled and smiled at me.
For a short time, we simply stared at each other. There was some kind of tension between us that made our situation inconvenient.
"I have to go now", I mumbled then and looked away, "I'll see you later, doc."
He laughed.
Then I left him behind, carefully driving back to my room.
"Ah, there you are!", Rose received me, smiling from one ear to another, "I have some good news for you!"
I entered my room and parked the wheelchair in front of my bed. Immediately, Rose reached out for me, trying to help. But I refused.
"I have to do this on my own", I added quietly and sat down on the counter of my bed.
"Okay", she agreed and nodded slightly.
"What did you want to tell me?", I asked then.
"Oh, right", she continued and laughed, "I talked to your lawyer and..."
She searched for something inside her bag.
As she finally found what she was searching for, she handed me an envelope.
"What's that?", I asked curiously and opened the envelope.
"Divorce papers", I read and looked up to Rose again.
"Congratulations", she said, "You're officially divorced."
I simply stared at her. I didn't expect to be divorced so soon.
"Danny agreed?", I asked in surprise.
"No, but after all... A judge decided it'd be the best for everyone", she explained.
"And Elsa?", I wanted to know.
"Oh that was easier. He didn't even fight for her", she added.
Yeah, that was what I expected. He didn't even care for her when I was in coma. Why should he now that I was awake again?
"As soon as you're allowed to leave, we'll search for a little flat for you and Elsa", she continued, "And until then, you two are going to stay with me!"
I smirked at her.
"Okay", I agreed because I knew it would have been useless to argue with her.
She was stronger and more self confident than I remembered. I was curious if she became the person she was now because of my situation during the last years. But I liked the new Rose.
