"Ajaya to front checkout. Ajaya to the front checkout, thank you." Megan, the supervisor, called over the intercom.I stocked the last shelf of bath towels and went to the front. The lines were long. I went to my register switching on my light.
"I can help a few guests over here." A couple of customers came my way and I finished them up turning my switch back off for the night.
"Whew, that was a lot of people." Gina sparked a convo while in the crew room.
"Everybody always wants to rush in here when it's almost time to close." I grabbed my keys from my locker.
"Hey, can I catch a ride with you?" I nodded my head and she followed me out the exit to my car.
"Where you live?"
"Rush Apartments. Near downtown." She rummaged out a pill bottle popping one.
"You okay?" I asked. The bottle read Xanax across it. She placed it back in her purse and looked out the window with a smile.
"Now I will be."
I've been working with Gina since she transferred to this store a year ago. She wasn't really the talker, always stayed to herself. Odd for her to even ask for a ride.
"Was it a Tylenol?" I wasn't sure if it was my place to ask but she did slip it in her mouth like it wasn't. She cleared her throat.
"Xanax actually." She sat looking out the window unbothered by the question.
"Any friends?" She looked at me.
"Not even one." Pulling up into the apartments she directed me to hers.
"Thanks for the ride." She dragged her work bag out of the car closing the door behind her.
"No problem, take my number down maybe we can hang out sometime." She smiled pulling her phone out to put it in. Seconds later a call was coming through to me.
Once she entered the house I headed to Von's.
"Look who's home," Vonnie shouted from the kitchen. I closed the door behind me following her voice.
"Yes, bitch I had a long day." I walked in to see Von giving Jr some food in the high chair and Maddison. Vonnie peeped the confused face I had and answered the question for me.
"You saw Maddie before right? She's waiting on Vijiour." I nodded my head moving to Jr to tickle his little tummy. His little cute self threw his food all over the place with that gummy smile.
"So you and my brother. Y'all serious?" Vonnie munched on a bowl of grapes sitting on the island.
"Not yet. He told me he wasn't a player but I think otherwise." I cleared my throat moving from the fridge to a stool at the island.
"He brought you to the house he might not be." I contributed. Maddison gave a small smile.
"We met kind of awkwardly. I'm Maddison." She batted her eyelashes hoping I'd respond.
"Ajaya. You live around here?"
"No, actually I don't. I came to visit an old friend and stumbled across Vijiour. He wanted me to stay in town a little longer." Von and I looked in awe.
"I like her," Von said out loud. I scooted out my seat to pick up Jr. I enjoyed bothering him.
"Hey, baby. Are you done eating? Huh? Or you want some more." I tossed him in the air showering him with kisses on his tummy.
