School was officially back in session, and Dillon and I were going really well. He taught my mother how to properly take pictures, his friends became mine, mine became his. And the best part about it all was that he has been learning sign language for me. He can now officially hold a five minute conversation with me before I have to pull out my phone to talk to him.
He was walking me home at the end of the school day, and it was honestly too cold to probably be walking. It had gotten so cold that he decided we should just go down to the rundown subway train that he often used as his getaway.
Once we entered the train, we positioned ourselves next to each other on the floor. We've been here like this before. He was so broken then and if he's still a broken soul, he hides it too well now.
"So, I've been thinking," he started while signing. "I asked about you going to the spring formal thing this month, and I've decided we should just have our own little dance. Be somewhere that's not in the school building. Just something for us. What do you think?"
I looked at Dillon with admiration before signing back, "I honestly think that sounds better, but what about your friends? I thought they wanted to hang out with you."
"They did. But we all graduate this year. There may never be another chance," he spoke and signed back.
I raised my brow, "Prom?"
Dillon grimaced at the thought, "Maybe, but I hate crowds."
"But you love parties," I pointed out.
He laughed looking down. He looked back up at me and pulled me into an awkward side hug while kissing me on the nose.
"I love you, you know that," he said with amusement lacing his face. I just rolled my eyes in response.
We sat there for another twenty minutes before we decided we should keep walking, but I ended up distracted by the local book & record store. I grabbed Dillon's arm and dragged him inside with me and immediately to the records. I was looking around at every record station possible before setting on an old Disney record from the Cinderella movie.
I brought the record with me to one of the record players and handed Dillon a pair of old retro headphones. Dillon looked at my choice for a vinyl and gave me a 'really' look. I just shrugged it off and put the vinyl on the record player and we both sat on the ground to listen to the soundtrack. Well, he listen and I felt the vibrations. We stayed in the record section for a few hours, taking turns on which vinyl to listen to next. Once it came down to the last hour, Dillon grabbed one more vinyl–a Louis Armstrong vinyl to be exact.
He put the vinyl on the record player and we both peacefully sat with our headphones on. After a minute or so into the song, Dillon attempt to sign the lyrics of the song for me. His signing was a bit bad, but I adored it. After the record stopped playing, we put all of the vinyls back. All except the Louis Armstrong one, Dillon bought it for me when I wasn't looking.
We left the store hand in hand back to my house. I cherished the day, and boy did I want to do it again.
