✏Ch. 8: Mistakes

Amy's POV

So, there's gonna be a party for my batch. Something like a winter ball I guess.

And now I'm in school with the twins to help prepare for the said party which will be held in two days. "It's like a major makeover." laughed Bella as we entered the gym.

Bridget shrugged. "The gym will still be the gym."

"Fair enough."

There were already students helping out, so we went ahead and did as well. Bella helped hang some streamers or ribbons, Bridget with the balloons, while I helped with the other decorations. As I went around to help, I saw Toby assisting with the light/sound setup. He waved and I flashed a smile. I then saw him go to Anna and help her fix the tablecloths. Toby then went to Bella, Bridget and other students. He basically helped almost everyone- what a helpful boy. Lastly, he came to me and helped me hang the snowflake ornaments. "Thanks." I said.

"No problem. See you later." he smiled and went around.

I nodded and continued attaching strings to the decorations when Bella threw her arm around my shoulder. "So, what's going on with you and Toby?"

Blushing madly, I defended. "Nothing! Come on Bella."

"Serious though."

"Nothing. We're just friends." I continued to say.

From afar, I could see Anna shaking her head disapprovingly. Hey, does she have ultra hearing? Why can she hear my words? Nevermind. "But in all honesty, don't you feel anything towards him?" Bridget questioned.

I gave a sigh and shrugged. "I don't know, really. Ever since I met Toby, I just felt more important."

"Keep going." smirked Bella.

"Really. Toby, well of course you guys too, make me feel...like I have worth I guess."

"Aw." the twins cooed.

I chuckled and gently slapped their shoulders. "Come on. Back to work."

**hours later, in the classroom**

Bella rocked back and forth on her chair. Bridget sat on sat on her sister's table and swung her legs. I just stood there, resting. Toby came in with his friends, then noticed and approached me. With a smile, he was going to say something but Anna cut him off. "Hey Toby."

"Hi Anna." he smiled gently. I wish I could do that.

She took Toby's hand and led him to her desk, which was just a table away from where we were. "You can't trust Amy, you know?" Anna said loud enough.

Bella was about to charge there, but I stopped her. "I don't get it." Toby admitted.

Anna snickered and smiled. "Don't be fooled by her gentleness. Remember she's smart? Remember her little family issue?"

I cringed, but she continued anyway. "I heard her say 'Toby makes me feel important.' Don't you see? She's using you just to feel good. She became more confident after meeting you. She's using your popularity to stand out."

And that caused my friends to snap. Bridget and Bella charged there, with Bella exclaiming, "Shut up Anna! That's so not true."

I went over to hold the irritated girl back. "Well, if it isn't true, why doesn't Amy ever get noticed without Toby? People noticed Amy when she started hanging out with Toby.” Anna explained.

That was very false, but it hurt so hard to be accused of that. And annoying. Toby tried to say something but Bridget shushed him. Anna added, "That's right. Without Toby, you're nothing. With Toby, you're something."

So...I only have value when I'm attached to a popular person? That's her logic there. "Amy..." Toby whispered as my eyes blurred with tears.

"Don't." I said, my voice rising.

Bella and Bridget held their cold glares at Anna who smirked. "Amy." Toby said again, trying to take my hand.

I jerked it back. "Don't! You're making things worse! Ever since I met you, things between Anna and me got even worse! You're making it worse!" I exclaimed.

At that moment, I wanted to take it back. I shouted that without thinking; I was enraged at Anna, but I took it out on Toby. I realized that, and felt embarrassed and shame. "I'll see you girls soon." I mumbled to the twins and immediately ran out, heading home.

A great day turned into a nightmare. Just because of a lie and the wrong reaction and words.
