Being a writer and a college student is one of the most difficult things for me. When I write I feel a freedom, a way to escape from the normal mundane life. Unfortunately Most of the "free time" I have is spent doing homework. My writing is then forced onto the back burner of my mind where it is forgotten and proceeds to boil over making a huge mess of things. When it decides to boil over I end up letting my homework build up or even sit in the dark of my dorm room with the rain falling softly outside my window writing into the wee hours of the morning. It's even worse when you're in the middle of writing a novel and are forced to read novel instead of writing your own. Don't get me wrong, I really do enjoy school, I just wish that I had more time for writing. So I have come up with a plan to make it so I'll always have time to write.
1). Get all my homework done (or most of it) the day it's assigned so it doesn't build up and crumble on top of me.
2). Tell myself I can write for the rest of the evening if I get a large chunk of reading done (3+ chapters) so that way I don't feel guilty.
3). Finish all my homework by Friday evening so I can spend the rest of my weekend sitting on the couch with a cup of tea, writing to my heart's content.
Now, I know that this plan won't always work out, but it's worth a try. I really want to finish my first draft of my manuscript by my 20th birthday (November 7th) but if I can't reach that then finishing it by January 1st, 2015 would be the next best thing. My goal is to be a published author and every day I strive for that goal. Some days, it's one of the few things that keep me going.
