I stared at my English homework, stifling a groan. I took the class because I wanted to learn more about the surface world, not because I wanted a headache.
I closed the book with a sigh, resting my head on the cool table.
"Kaldur, are you done? Mother wants to leave. She seems really upset about something." Percy swam over and sat next to me.
"This homework is giving me some issues." I mumbled, picking up my book. "I will ask Father for help, he has said he knows English."
"Oh, you did not finish that in class?"
"Unlike you, I like to think through my work instead of asking the smartest kid in class for help."
Percy shrugged. "When will I ever use English? It is not like I have a reason to go to the surface. You are the one who wants to travel."
I laughed and swam out of the library with Percy.
Well, we tried to swim out of the library would be a more accurate version of events.
Hands grabbed me and a hand covered my mouth.
A quick glance to my side revealed the same was happening with Percy.
We were pulled through a side exit and a bag was placed over my head.
Our kidnappers pulled us after them, and despite my best efforts I could not break free.
"Are you sure we should do this?" A voice asked.
"If this does not scare Fish Heads out of Poseidonis, I do not know what will."
"Let us go!" Percy yelled. I could hear her yelp in pain and I struggled against the person holding me.
"No turning back now..." The person who originally spoke now mumbled.
"Stop! Please!" Percy cried out.
"Over here!" A voice yelled and I breathed out a sigh of relief as our captors released us, no doubt fleeing.
I reached up and took off the bag. My eyes immediately widened as I saw Percy pressing herself against the wall of the cave we were in. She held her hand to her shoulder as blood flowed from between her fingers.
I swam over and took the bag off of her head, earning a knee to the stomach in return.
"Sorry..." She mumbled, staring at me with unfocused eyes.
"Are you two okay?"
Our heads snapped to the direction of the voice, and then I snapped into a salute.
"My king." I said, Percy's words softer than mine.
King Orin stared at us before swimming over. He crouched down in front of Percy and reached out a hand. Percy recoiled, pulling her body away from him.
"May I?" He asked before waiting patiently.
Percy swallowed and glanced at me before dropping her hand from her shoulder.
King Orin gently placed a hand on the side of her shoulder. "I am going to try to clear the blood away, it may sting...a little bit..." He trailed off as a current shifted to run past us, moving blood away from Percy's wound.
He closed his eyes and sighed. "That is going to scar."
I moved so I could try to see what he was speaking of. A line of ancient runes was cut into my sisters skin, spelling out impure.
"Are you okay Percy?" I asked.
"Wait...you are Sha'lain'a's children are you not?" King Orin asked.
"You know Mother?" Percy asked.
He nodded absentmindedly before straightening. "Come along. Your mother must be worried about you."
He swam to the end of the cave. I grabbed Percy's hand and the two of us followed after him.
He led us back to Poseidonis, to the library where Mother was looking around anxiously.
"Mother!" I yelled and sped towards her, tackling her in a hug.
"How did you get outside without- My king?"
King Orin sighed. "Purists kidnapped them. Another child told the guards and I was nearby so I helped. I am afraid I did not arrive fast enough to prevent injury to your children."
Mother's eyes scanned me before moving to Percy. Her eyes took in the writing on her shoulder.
Sighing, Mother scooped Percy up. "I think we should return home. These two will need to rest after the days ordeal."
"Why are you in Poseidonis?" King Orin asked. "It is quite the swim from Shayeris."
"Calvin had business to attend to and these two had schoolwork to complete so I let them complete it while I went to the market." Mother gestured to the open water market across the road.
If they would have taken us out the front- No.
If Mother would have witnessed it, she would have gotten hurt. Probably worse than Percy did.
"You trust them enough to leave them alone in a library?"
"My king, if there is something Kaldur cannot talk Percy out of it does not matter where I am, she will do it. For the record, I was in the main foyer waiting for them. And I was under the impression you had dealt with the Purists several years ago."
"They always make a resurgence. If we are lucky this will be a one time attack, and nobody else will be targeted."
"If we are lucky, this event will not have traumatized my children."
King Orin crossed his arms. "So did you discuss my proposition with your daughter?"
"This is hardly the-"
"What?" Percy asked.
Our king spoke before Mother could. "I wish for you to attend schooling on the surface. It will be a good learning opportunity for you."
"Why not Kaldur?" Percy asked.
"What about your brother?"
"He wants to see the surface more than I do. He should go."
"The woman who will be your guardian said she would take you in. Only you. For what reason, I do not know. But I do know, this could prove vital to any sea to surface transitions in the future."
Mother sighed. "Percy, I am sorry if you do not want to go but our king is right. This is an amazing opportunity for you and you should take it."
"But-"
"This is final. Now, if you would excuse us my king, I would like to begin our journey home."
