Campfire

Newt and I gathered around the campfire. I sat there with a cup of something nasty but warm in my hands. I was afraid to say anything to Newt about how bad it tasted. So I just sat there in silence.

After a few minuets, I reflected on my day. Trying to let all the confusing news sink in. Then... Something hit me like a pile of bricks... in the FACE: What did I look like?! ... Was I ugly? Charming? Were my eyes like Newt's eyes of honey?

I soon figured out that I cannot hold my tongue... at all. "Newt? What do I look like?"

"Huh?"

I thought of saying something else but my curiosity was too strong.

"What do I look like?"

"Well..." he began, "hm. Well, you're strawberry blonde. And... You have the cutest little nose. And... You have the eyes of the ocean." As he spoke, Newt leaned closer to look deep into my eyes.

Then an Asian boy about 17 ran up in front of us and said, "Hey. Greenie! Yah wanna watch how we get down in the Glade?" I laughed at how random he said it. Then I said sure with a girly smile.

"Bye the way. Name's Minho, shank."

"Ellie."

"Well... Ellie. Grab a drum."

I then realized that he was pointing towards homemade drums. I grabbed one unsure if I even knew how to play.

A few boys surrounded me. A couple with drums and one boy hummed to the beat. The boy to my left started off the beat. Others started adding rhythm, and I soon caught on.

The beat was amazing. It was as if I could live in that one moment forever. And then it became even better. Newt ran up from the crowd that had formed while we were playing and grabbed my hand. He twirled me around and we danced. Everything was perfect.

But then I heard it. I heard the terrible noise that every first Glader loathes to hear: a Griever. I heard the terrible beast that haunted the maze outside the Glade. It was a noise that sounded like a monster straight out of hell.

I fainted.

All I remember was falling to the ground, and the last thing I saw was Newt's face twisted in concern and confusion. Those eyes of honey... tearing up.
