"Have you ever thought that their way in is our way out?"

This situation wasn't like any other where I could just run to Newt and cry my heart out. Newt was part of the problem!

This was the world's way of saying to me that I should wake up. No, it was more like a slap in the face.

My legs wouldn't move at all. In fact, I just collapsed there on the floor. Brenda came rushing to my side. I felt this surge of anger flood over my whole body. Brenda...

I looked up at her, my eyes already starting to get red and puffy.
"I swear, Ellie, I don't-"

I interrupted her, "Please just don't." I held up my hand and bent my head down to look at the floor I was inches from.

I suddenly remembered how I got through the panic of the box when I first arrived in the Glade. I counted to ten in my head:
1, 2, 3, 4... 5... I took a deep breath... 6... I closed my eyes... 7... I folded my hands in my lap... 8... I focused my attention on my breathing... 9... I could no longer hear my heart pounding in my head... 10...

I opened up my eyes and looked up from where I was sitting. I looked Brenda in the face, "Someone great and wise once told me that the people who lived before the maze are gone forever. All that matters now is who we are now and what we do now."

Brenda simply nodded in reply, soaking up what I repeated from my wise friend, Newt. I sighed. Then I simply asked, "Brenda? Do you love Newt?"

Just like I had before, I was willing to give up what I had with Newt in order to make others safe and happy, especially Newt. I knew him. He would not want to leave a child all by him/herself. He would be selfless, as always, and care for the kid. ... I had to be selfless too.

Brenda exhaled and looked me straight in the eyes, "You know, I don't even know the guy... How can you love someone when you don't even know him?"

I had this feeling of relief wash over me. Relief? She doesn't know the guy, there's still a large possibility that you won't end up with him!

Brenda and I left Chuck and Jeff in the Homestead to go find Newt. When we found him gardening, Brenda and him talked alone. I say far off on a small hill, watching their conversation from a distance. Watching Newt's expressions was like watching the weather not knowing whether to make up its mind. His face twisted into confusion then shock then concentration then flat out worry.

I watched him slowly walk towards me, shuffling his feet. Once he reached me, I saw how sad his eyes were. It was almost as if there was a bubble surrounding him that made everyone know that he was worried.

He pushed his hand into the front of his hair, "What are we going to do now..."

I had to say to Newt what I had said to Brenda earlier. "Newt? Remember what you told me when I figured out I had... done all this?" She motioned her hand around the Glade.

Newt sighed. "Don't give me that crap now. That doesn't even apply to this situation." This only made his expression twist into more worry.

I sighed lightly too, and then her eyes hardened, "That 'crap' is your own words! When I was in a situation like this, remember what you told me?! YOU told me that it doesn't matter what you did before the Glade. Because those people aren't even us, they're different people! Now I'M going to say that same thing to you!"

Newt's worried expression drifted away from his face and was replaced with guilt. "Ellie..."

I huffed a breath and continued, "I know you have a big job to do since Alby is basically bed ridden-"

I was interrupted by Newt's arms engulfing her small body. He stood there embracing me and said, "I'm sorry, Ellie. You have no idea..."

"I know, I know you are. And I know you want me to be safe, but we also have to protect everybody else, too." My words were muffled into Newt's shirt.

I looked up at him. I knew we couldn't do this on our own. "We need Minho," I said. "Now."

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

I looked around the small hut. We were in an I closed shack in the middle of Deadwood. Minho was looking at this wooden maze he had created over the span of 2-3 years. Crazy.

"Where did you say the Cliff was, shank?" I asked Minho.

He pointed to a spot on the map where it just ended, it faded off into existence much like the real thing.

Minho pulled his hand up to his forehead and concentrated. I interrupted his concentration.

"Have you ever thought that their way in is our way out?"
