I Hate You

So in stories where the two main characters 'hate' each other, it usually goes back to some childhood pettiness. 

"Johnny didn't share his snack with me. So I hate you now!" 

"I don't care. I didn't like you anyway, Sally." 

Then this beef just goes on forever all the way through high school/college. 

Then when they give this person they 'hate' a chance. Then they fall in love with them and blah blah. 

I don't the word 'hate' should be used. Cause all educated people know that 'hate' is a very strong word and it shouldn't be thrown around. 

So when authors use 'hate' on little or petty things I just ...

I need better reasons for why I should 'hate' this character instead of he didn't share his snack with me in kindergarten.
